{"id":78728,"date":"2026-07-08T18:35:52","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T13:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=78728"},"modified":"2026-07-08T18:37:03","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T13:07:03","slug":"india-lifts-energy-curbs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-07-2026\/india-lifts-energy-curbs","title":{"rendered":"India Lifted the Energy Curbs Imposed during the West Asia Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Governance\/GS3\/Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government has<strong> lifted emergency curbs<\/strong> it had imposed on the supply of natural gas during the West Asia crisis in March.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On March 12, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas told Parliament about the <strong>\u201cimmediate priority sequence\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Domestic piped gas to homes and CNG for vehicles receive <strong>100% supply with no cuts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industrial and manufacturing consumers will receive up to <strong>80% of their previous six-month average.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fertilizer plants will receive<strong> up to 70%, <\/strong>protecting the agricultural input chain ahead of the sowing season.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Refineries and petrochemical units absorb a managed reduction, with that gas redirected to higher-priority sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government cited <strong>\u201cceasefire and negotiations\u201d<\/strong> and the resumption o<strong>f \u201csea traffic through the Strait of Hormuz\u201d <\/strong>to restore gas supplies.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which sector uses LNG the most?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fertilizer plants<\/strong> are known to consume a <strong>bulk of India\u2019s LNG. <\/strong>A little less than 30% of natural gas use goes into making fertilizers, while power plants account for 13% and city gas distribution 21%.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Urea, which has around 46% of nitrogen, is the most common nitrogen fertilizer. It is produced by converting natural gas (methane) into ammonia and then combining it with carbon dioxide.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Energy Demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is expected to account for <strong>over 23% of global incremental energy demand by 2050,<\/strong> the highest for any country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In order to meet this growing demand, India has focused on strengthening its energy systems <strong>through policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, and cleaner energy pathways.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d0ccbf\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"516\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India\u2019s LPG imports<\/strong> account for around 60% of domestic consumption, and about 90% of those imports normally move through Hormuz.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Thus, roughly <strong>54% of normal LPG availability<\/strong> is under direct exposure if the corridor remains shut.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Efforts to Strengthen Energy Security<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Oilfield (Regulation and Development) Amendment Act, 2025: <\/strong>It modernises India\u2019s upstream regulatory framework by simplifying procedures, enabling integrated energy development, and strengthening investor confidence.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The reform aims to enhance domestic oil and gas production, improve energy security, and support a stable, transparent policy environment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Petroleum and Natural Gas Rules, 2025: <\/strong>It provides a modern and transparent regulatory framework for the exploration and production of oil and natural gas.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unified Pipeline Tariff (UPT):<\/strong> Introduced in 2023, under &#8220;One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff,&#8221; the UPT was launched to address regional disparity in gas transportation costs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel and Gas Infrastructure: <\/strong>The nationwide fuel retail network expanded from around 52,000 outlets in 2014 to over one lakh by 2025, improving last-mile fuel availability across urban and rural areas.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Under the vision of One Nation, One Gas Grid, <strong>the natural gas pipeline network expanded to over 25,400 km.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electric Mobility Infrastructure: <\/strong>Electric mobility infrastructure expanded with 8,932 EV charging stations installed at retail outlets under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &amp;) Electric Vehicles (FAME) Phase-II, along with over 18,500 additional charging stations set up by Oil Marketing Companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The ethanol blending programme has resulted in <\/strong>foreign exchange savings of about \u20b91.59 lakh crore, reduction of 813 lakh metric tonnes of CO\u2082 emissions, and substitution of 270 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil since 2014, <strong>reflecting the role of biofuels in reducing import dependence and emissions.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF):<\/strong> The government has set<strong> indicative blending targets for SAF in Aviation Turbine Fuel <\/strong>for international flights at 1% from 2027, 2% from 2028 and 5% from 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India\u2019s participation in platforms such as the<strong> Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA) and the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group<\/strong> reflects its emphasis on practical and inclusive approaches to energy transition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India Energy Week<\/strong> serves as an international platform for dialogue among governments, industry, financial institutions, and technology providers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternative Sources:<\/strong> India is now securing LPG from alternative sources, including the United States, Russia, Norway, and Canada.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s energy landscape has undergone <strong>a significant transformation in recent years, <\/strong>supported by policy reforms, infrastructure expansion, and
