They can happen suddenly or <strong>more slowly over long periods of time.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the force of gravity acting on a slope exceeds the resisting forces of a slope, the slope will fail and a landslide occurs. category.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Himalayas, Northeastern States, and Western Ghats are the country&#8217;s major landslide hotspots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sikkim has the highest share of landslide-prone area (57.6%)<\/strong>, whereas Kerala has nearly 14% of its area in the &#8216;very high susceptibility&#8217; category despite being outside the Himalayan region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India accounts for<strong> around 8% of global deaths caused by landslides<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The agency for mapping landslide-prone areas and hazard assessment is the<strong> Geological Survey of India (GSI).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"efeceb\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"989\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/07\/image-51-1024x989.png\" alt=\"landslide zones of india\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-78437\" style=\"--dominant-color: #efeceb; they are usually a combination of natural vulnerability and human interference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Himalayan regions there are factors like presence of young and tectonically active mountains, hydropower projects, road widening, tunnelling and intense rainfall and cloud bursts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Western ghats, although geologically older and more stable than the Himalayas but heavy monsoon rainfall, mining, quarrying, tourism, and unplanned construction increase the landslide risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Steps Taken to Reduce Landslide Risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Landslide Forecasting Centre (NLFC):<\/strong> It was set up by the GSI in Kolkata to improve landslide forecasting and early warnings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bhusanket Portal &amp; Bhooskhalan App:<\/strong> These apps provide real-time landslide forecasts and reporting of landslide events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NDMA Guidelines:<\/strong> The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued comprehensive guidelines for managing landslides and snow avalanches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Landslide Risk Management Strategy:<\/strong> Focuses on hazard mapping, monitoring, early warning systems, awareness, capacity building, and slope stabilization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sendai Framework (2015\u20132030): <\/strong>India follows this global framework for disaster risk reduction and building resilience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What NDMA Says?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a clear road map:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prepare the <strong>Landslip Hazard Zonation (LHZ) maps<\/strong> so that we know exactly which areas need attention.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GSI to maintain a <strong>National Landslip Database <\/strong>to monitor trends and risk over time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retaining walls, rock bolting, wire mesh, and vegetation cover can all be used to physically stabilise slopes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fix drainage so water does not collect<\/strong> and seep into the slope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Notify and implement the <strong>Eco-Sensitive Area (ESA) framework<\/strong> in the Western Ghats to regulate mining, quarrying, and large infrastructure projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make land-use zoning based on detailed<strong> Landslide Hazard Zonation (LHZ) maps mandatory <\/strong>in hilly regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deploy AI-enabled sensors, early warning systems into vulnerable areas so people receive alerts on time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employ drones, LiDAR and satellite imagery to keep a constant eye on vulnerable slopes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rely on afforestation and other nature-based solutions<\/strong>.
