{"id":78081,"date":"2026-06-30T18:23:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T12:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=78081"},"modified":"2026-06-30T18:23:20","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T12:53:20","slug":"digital-india-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/30-06-2026\/digital-india-mission","title":{"rendered":"The Digital India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Digital India Programme completes 11 years as on 1 July 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India&#8217;s Digital Leadership<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over the last decade, Digital India has become the foundation of <strong>India\u2019s digital economy<\/strong> and <strong>Digital Public Infrastructure.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It accelerated innovation, startup growth, and technology adoption across the various sectors.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is now leads global real-time digital payments with UPI handling nearly <strong>49% <\/strong>of worldwide transaction volume.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The digital economy contributes nearly <strong>12\u201314% of India\u2019s GDP<\/strong> and expected to contribute around <strong>one-fifth<\/strong> over the next decade.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India also launched<strong> India Stack Global<\/strong> and the <strong>Global DPI Repository<\/strong> during its G20 Presidency in 2023 which help in expanding global access to Indian digital solutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As of February 2026, India has signed <strong>MoUs with 24 countries<\/strong> for cooperation on India Stack and DPI systems, covering digital identity, payments and service delivery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are the Nine Pillars of Digital India?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Broadband Access:<\/strong> Reliable broadband is essential for digital governance and inclusive economic growth.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For example:<\/strong> The broadband Internet subscriber base increased to <strong>106.58 Cr.<\/strong> at the end of March 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Universal Access to Mobile Connectivity:<\/strong> As of Jan 2026, around 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats i.e. nearly 97% have been connected with close to 7 lakh Km of optical fiber cable under the under<strong> BharatNet-1 and BharatNet-2.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Public Internet Access Programme: <\/strong>Accessible digital centres help citizens access services near their homes. Like more than 6.5 lakh Common Service Centres and 1.6 lakh post offices now deliver digital services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>e-Governance:<\/strong> It promotes paperless, integrated, and public-centric administration.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Platforms such as <strong>DigiLocker<\/strong> and the <strong>National Single Sign-On ecosystem<\/strong> enable seamless access to certificates, applications, payments, and public services, reducing paperwork while improving ease of living.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>e-Kranti: <\/strong>As the service delivery pillar of Digital India, e-Kranti has accelerated the shift from physical to digital governance.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrated platforms such as <strong>e-Hospital, e-Sanjeevani, and e-Courts<\/strong> have simplified access to certificates, healthcare and justice services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Information for All: <\/strong>This pillar strengthens transparent and participatory governance by making government information easily accessible and encouraging citizen engagement through digital platforms.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Initiatives such as <strong>MyGov and Open Government Data<\/strong> enable citizens to access information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electronics Manufacturing:<\/strong> Electronics production has increased from \u20b91.9 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 to about \u20b912 lakh crore as of March 2026.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today, <strong>India is the world&#8217;s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer<\/strong>, reflecting its growing role in global electronics value chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IT for Jobs: <\/strong>The IT and ITeS industry is estimated to have generated USD 283 billion in revenue in FY25, according to NASSCOM.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s 2,100+ Global Capability Centres (GCCs) employ around <strong>26 lakh <\/strong>professionals across engineering, analytics, cyber security, and AI-driven roles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Early Harvest Programmes:<\/strong> Quick-impact initiatives such as biometric attendance, secure government email, public Wi-Fi hotspots, eBooks, SMS-based weather alerts, and digital communication platforms demonstrated the immediate benefits of technology-led governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flagship Initiatives That Powered an Inclusive Decade<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>JAM Trinity:<\/strong> The Foundation of Digital India has revolutionised financial inclusion and welfare delivery in India. It brought millions into the formal banking system and enabled seamless access to government services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"bcd8e8\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #bcd8e8;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"456\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-242.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-78082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-242.png 456w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-242-300x205.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DigiLocker:<\/strong> DigiLocker is replacing physical documents with a secure digital wallet, and transforming document storage and verification across India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As of March 2026, the platform has registered over <strong>70.69\u00a0 crore<\/strong> users and issued more than <strong>850+ Cr documents<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unified Payments Interface (UPI): <\/strong>Completing ten years in <strong>2026<\/strong>, UPI is transforming digital payments through instant and secure transactions for citizens and businesses.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UPI\u2019s global footprint now extends to <strong>nine countries,<\/strong> with <strong>Cambodia<\/strong> becoming the latest to adopt it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Platforms Powering Public Health:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Online Registration System (ORS) <\/strong>enables patients to book appointments digitally while reducing queues and paperwork. The cloud-based eHospital platform is digitising hospital operations, while eBloodBank is improving blood availability and management across healthcare institutions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>eSanjeevani: <\/strong>The telemedicine platform is connecting patients with doctors remotely, especially in rural and underserved regions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tele MANAS<\/strong> provides free tele-counselling and mental health support nationwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empowering Commerce Through Technology:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Government e-Marketplace (GeM)<\/strong> has transformed public procurement by making it transparent, efficient and paperless.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)<\/strong> is creating an open and interoperable digital commerce ecosystem that connects buyers and sellers across platforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AgriStack: Empowering Farmers Through Technology<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developed under the Digital Agriculture Mission, AgriStack is a farmer-centric DPI powering services such as <strong>e-NAM for online agricultural trading<\/strong> and <strong>Kisan e-Mitra,<\/strong> an AI-powered chatbot providing instant farming information and government scheme support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital Platforms Driving Educational Access:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing)<\/strong> is transforming school education through curriculum-linked digital learning resources and teacher training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) <\/strong>and <strong>SWAYAM Prabha<\/strong> are expanding access to quality education beyond classrooms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Powering India&#8217;s Digital Workforce:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PMGDISHA<\/strong> bridged the rural digital divide by training citizens in smartphone usage, internet access, digital payments and online services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>FutureSkills Prime<\/strong> is preparing learners for emerging technologies such as AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity and data analytics.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH)<\/strong> is a unified platform for skilling, certification and employment services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>IndiaAI Mission<\/strong> is strengthening AI education, infrastructure and responsible AI adoption.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthen digital infrastructure:<\/strong> Complete universal broadband connectivity, particularly in remote and Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bridge the digital divide:<\/strong> Enhance digital literacy programmes to ensure that rural populations, women, senior citizens, and other vulnerable groups are not excluded from the digital economy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Boost manufacturing ecosystem: <\/strong>Strengthen domestic value addition through the <strong>Semiconductor Mission<\/strong>, encourage research and development, and integrate India more deeply into global technology supply chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source:
