{"id":78078,"date":"2026-06-30T18:21:16","date_gmt":"2026-06-30T12:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=78078"},"modified":"2026-06-30T18:21:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-30T12:51:32","slug":"hamburg-summit-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/30-06-2026\/hamburg-summit-2026","title":{"rendered":"Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Issues Relating to Hunger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the<strong> Global Report on Food Crises 2026 (GRFC 2026) report, <\/strong>more than 266 million people are facing high levels of acute food insecurity across 47 countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Findings of the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) 2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High Acute Hunger: <\/strong>Around <strong>266 million people (22.9% of the assessed population)<\/strong> experienced high levels of acute food insecurity in 2025.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It has remained above <strong>20% since 2020<\/strong>, and nearly doubled compared to 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional Distribution of Hunger Crisis: <\/strong>Ten countries accounted for nearly <strong>two-thirds of the global burden<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among these, Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan and Yemen witnessed the <strong>gravest crises.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Catastrophic Hunger:<\/strong> About 1.4 million people in six countries were classified under the &#8216;<strong>Catastrophe&#8217; (IPC Phase 5) category, the highest level of acute food insecurity.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It represents a nine-fold increase since 2016.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Famines were declared in Gaza and parts of Sudan<\/strong>, marking the first time in GRFC history that <strong>famine was identified in more than one country<\/strong> in the same year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Child Malnutrition: <\/strong>Nearly <strong>35.5 million children<\/strong> suffer from acute malnutrition.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Around <strong>10 million children<\/strong> faced severe acute malnutrition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conflict as the Primary Driver: <\/strong>Conflict and insecurity affected <strong>147.4 million people across 19 countries<\/strong>, overtaking extreme weather as the leading driver of hunger.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prolonged conflicts have disrupted agriculture, markets, livelihoods and humanitarian access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Declining Financing: <\/strong>Funding for food crisis responses has fallen to levels last seen during <strong>2016-17<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduced surveys by the <strong>World Food Programme (WFP)<\/strong> and <strong>Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/strong> have weakened global monitoring systems, resulting in underestimation of the actual crisis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hunger Crisis and India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India was not among the countries covered under the GRFC&#8217;s acute food crisis assessments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the <strong>Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2026<\/strong>, India attained its <strong>highest-ever position in the UN SDG Index<\/strong>, ranking <strong>94th among 167 countries<\/strong>, up from 99th position in 2025, with an overall score of <strong>68.3\/100<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It reflects progress in poverty reduction; sanitation and healthcare; digital governance and social protection delivery.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>However, progress towards <strong>SDG 2 (Zero Hunger)<\/strong> remains uneven.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Persistent child undernutrition despite improvements in food availability;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant inter-State and regional disparities in nutritional outcomes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High prevalence of anaemia among women and children;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate variability, agrarian distress and livelihood vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India and the Problem of Hunger<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the <strong>National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019-21)<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>35.5%<\/strong> of children under five years are <strong>stunted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>19.3%<\/strong> are <strong>wasted<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>32.1%<\/strong> are <strong>underweight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than <strong>57%<\/strong> of women aged 15-49 years are <strong>anaemic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around <strong>67%<\/strong> of children (6-59 months) suffer from <strong>anaemia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Related Efforts and Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Global Initiatives:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>World Food Programme (WFP) interventions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FAO&#8217;s Hand-in-Hand Initiative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives &amp;
