<strong>\u20b91.78 lakh crore in the Financial Year (FY) 2025-26.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It represents a <strong>15.6% growth<\/strong> over the previous fiscal year and a <strong>110% increase since FY 2020-21.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Public Sector Undertakings and other PSUs<\/strong> accounted for approximately <strong>76% <\/strong>of total production, while the <strong>private sector contributed 24%.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Approximately 65% of defence equipment<\/strong> is now produced domestically, as compared to import dependence of 65\u201370% earlier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India has set targets <\/strong>of \u20b93 lakh crore in defence production and <strong>\u20b950,000 crore in exports by class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Research, Innovation, and Partnership: <\/strong>Defence research and development allocation increased\u00a0 by over 112%\u00a0 in FY 2026\u201327 from FY 2014\u201315.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government also opened 25% of the defence R&amp;D budget to industry, start-ups, and academia in 2022-23.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX): <\/strong>The initiative actively engages industries, including MSMEs, startups, individual innovators, research institutions, and academia, in developing indigenous defence technologies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Development cum Production Partner (DcPP) Model: <\/strong>Under this model, DRDO identifies capable manufacturing partners from the public and private sectors through a competitive process and transfers the required technologies for production.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Building Human Capability for Technological Self-Reliance: <\/strong>DRDO established <strong>five Young Scientists Laboratories (DYSLs)<\/strong> in 2020, with a sixth laboratory scheduled for 2026, making the total number to be 36.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Newly recruited scientists now undergo a two-year M.Tech programme in defence technology at the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology before joining laboratories.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Acquisition Reforms to Push for Self-Reliance: <\/strong>Through DAP 2020 reforms, it prioritised indigenous procurement, domestic manufacturing, and higher indigenous content.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s Defence Diplomacy<\/strong>: India has expanded partnerships with major global powers while preserving strategic autonomy. Defense cooperation now extends beyond military exchanges to technology collaboration, industrial partnerships, and joint manufacturing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need for Defence Indigenisation Reforms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strategic Autonomy &amp; National Security: <\/strong>Defence Production reduces dependence on foreign suppliers, especially during crises and geopolitical tensions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Addressing Capability Gaps: <\/strong>India faces complex security challenges across borders and in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). It also prevents vulnerability due to sanctions, supply chain disruptions, or technology denials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of India\u2019s Rising Defence Production&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Structural Shift from Buyer to Builder:<\/strong> Indian defence products are now exported to over 80 countries worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"b9d1e1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #b9d1e1;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"277\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/06\/image-137.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-77331\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expansion of Defence Industrial Capacity: <\/strong>The indigenous defence ecosystem today comprises 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), around 500 licensed defence companies, and nearly 17,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Industrial Corridors: <\/strong>In 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor had attracted investment commitments worth \u20b942,057 crore, the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor attracted investments worth \u20b932,699 crore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ease of Doing Business in Defence Manufacturing:<\/strong> In 2015, the government revised this to 15 years initial validity, with a further extension possible up to 18 years. Under the Arms Act, licenses granted to companies are now valid for the lifetime of the company.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Revamped Defence Exim portal:<\/strong> The portal enables end-to-end application processing, automated company verification, simplified registration, real-time tracking, and secure payment integration.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indigenisation through Industries:<\/strong> The Ministry of Defence launched the Srijan Defence Portal in 2020.
