{"id":77168,"date":"2026-06-16T20:53:45","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T15:23:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=77168"},"modified":"2026-06-16T21:05:29","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T15:35:29","slug":"news-in-short-16-06-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-06-2026\/news-in-short-16-06-2026","title":{"rendered":"News In Short 16-06-2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Dengue Vaccine Safety Concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brazil recently suspended the administration of its dengue vaccine, <strong>Butantan-DV, <\/strong>after reports of severe adverse events, including two deaths, during a large-scale vaccination campaign.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Dengue?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dengue is a <strong>viral infection<\/strong> caused by the <strong>dengue virus (DENV),<\/strong> transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>DENV is an RNA virus<\/strong> of the <strong>Flaviviridae family<\/strong> with four serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infection with one serotype provides lifelong immunity against that serotype but only temporary protection against the others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong> High fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, rash.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transmission: <\/strong>The virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, primarily the <strong>Aedes Aegypti mosquito.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a<strong> possibility of maternal transmission of Dengue <\/strong>(from a pregnant mother to her baby), transmission via blood products, organ donation and transfusions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prevention: <\/strong>There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue, so prevention relies on controlling mosquito populations and raising public awareness.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The mosquitoes that spread dengue are active during the day. The best way of protection is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why are the concerns?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The development has raised concerns regarding the<strong> safety of India&#8217;s upcoming dengue vaccine, DengiAll<\/strong>, as both vaccines are based on similar scientific platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both vaccines are <strong>live attenuated tetravalent vaccines. <\/strong>They contain weakened forms of all four dengue virus serotypes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both are based on <strong>vaccine candidates (TV003 and TV005)<\/strong> originally developed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A vaccine candidate<\/strong> is a vaccine that is being tested for safety and effectiveness before receiving full regulatory approval.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The technology was later licensed to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instituto Butantan in Brazil (for Butantan-DV).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Panacea Biotec in India (for DengiAll).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Antibody-Dependent Enhancement (ADE)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ADE is a phenomenon in which antibodies produced after a previous dengue infection or vaccination fail to fully neutralise the virus during a subsequent infection.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of protecting the body, these antibodies can help the virus enter immune cells more easily, leading to a more severe infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How Does It Occur?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A dengue vaccine aims to generate immunity against all four serotypes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After vaccination, the body produces:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Type-specific antibodies,<\/strong> which provide strong protection against a particular serotype.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-reactive antibodies,<\/strong> which can recognise multiple serotypes but may provide weaker protection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Over time, the level of cross-reactive antibodies may decline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If a person is later infected by a different dengue serotype, these weakened antibodies may fail to stop the virus. It includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Centres of Excellence on Agro-Ecology and Regenerative Agriculture: <\/strong>A platform for joint research, experience sharing and capacity building on natural, organic and regenerative agricultural practices.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research, Modipuram, has been given an important role.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>BRICS Network on Digital Agriculture:<\/strong> For the cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, geospatial technology, digital public infrastructure and data-based agricultural solutions.
