It can be produced from <strong>sugarcane, maize, wheat, etc <\/strong>which are having high starch content.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcohol production involves<strong> fermentation of sugar<\/strong> using yeast. In cane juice or molasses, sugar is present in the form of <strong>sucrose <\/strong>that is <strong>broken down into glucose and fructose.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ethanol Blending Programme<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ethanol blending refers to the <strong>practice of mixing ethanol with gasoline <\/strong>to create a fuel mixture that can be used in internal combustion engines.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>\u2018National Policy on Biofuels\u2019 <\/strong>notified by the government in 2018 envisaged an indicative target of 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2030.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In 2014 only 1.5 per cent<\/strong> ethanol was blended in petrol in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Given the encouraging performance and various interventions made by the government <strong>the 20% target was achieved in 2025.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The programme has reportedly saved approximately<strong> \u20b91.13 lakh crore in foreign exchange <\/strong>and reduced nearly<strong> 544 lakh metric tonnes of CO\u2082 <\/strong>emissions cumulatively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In June 2026, the government introduced <strong>E85 for flex-fuel vehicles<\/strong>; E100 is expected to be offered in the near future too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is India Promoting Higher Ethanol Blends?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Enhancing Energy Security:<\/strong> India imports nearly 88.5% of its crude oil requirements.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Greater ethanol blending can<strong> reduce dependence on imported petroleum <\/strong>and improve energy resilience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It will also<strong> reduce foreign exchange outflows<\/strong> and improve macroeconomic stability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supporting Farmers: <\/strong>Ethanol production creates an additional market for sugarcane, maize, and surplus food grains, providing income support to farmers, particularly in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental Benefits:<\/strong> Ethanol is a renewable fuel that emits fewer pollutants compared to conventional petrol and higher blending can contribute to reduced carbon emissions and cleaner transportation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rural Industrialisation:<\/strong> Expansion of distilleries has stimulated rural infrastructure development and generated non-farm employment opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Biofuel Leadership:<\/strong> India is a founding member of the <strong>Global Biofuel Alliance<\/strong> launched during the <strong>G20 Summit.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The programme strengthens India&#8217;s role as a global leader in sustainable biofuels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives Taken by Government<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Policy on Biofuels, 2018 (Amended 2022):<\/strong> It expanded eligible feedstocks to include <strong>maize, damaged food grains, sugar beet, and surplus rice.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It reduced dependence on sugarcane as the sole ethanol source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ethanol Procurement Pricing: <\/strong>The government annually notifies ethanol procurement prices for<strong> Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This provides investment certainty to distilleries and income stability to farmers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interest Subvention Scheme:<\/strong> Provides subsidized credit for establishing and expanding distillery capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flex-Fuel Vehicle Initiative: <\/strong>The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has encouraged manufacturers to develop flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on higher ethanol blends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India has launched E85 fuel<\/strong> as part of its long-term strategy to move beyond E20 blending and promote flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The rollout commences across <strong>48 Public Sector OMC\u2019s retail outlets (ROs) <\/strong>in the country, enabling flex-fuel vehicle users to access this cleaner fuel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns Regarding Higher Ethanol Blending<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vehicle Compatibility Issues: <\/strong>Ethanol is highly <strong>hygroscopic<\/strong> i.e. it actively absorbs moisture from the atmosphere.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher ethanol blends may <strong>damage engine components<\/strong>, fuel lines, rubber seals, and metal parts in vehicles not specifically designed for such fuels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mileage: <\/strong>Ethanol contains <strong>lower energy per litre than petrol. <\/strong>The customers had flagged a drop in mileage after the E10 to E20 shift.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Feedstock Volatility: <\/strong>Sugarcane production remains highly dependent on monsoon conditions.
