{"id":74738,"date":"2026-05-23T21:24:50","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T15:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=74738"},"modified":"2026-05-23T21:27:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T15:57:04","slug":"sample-registration-survey-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/23-05-2026\/sample-registration-survey-2024","title":{"rendered":"Sample Registration Survey 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The recent Sample Registration Survey 2024 was released by the<strong> Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Sample Registration System (SRS)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It provides<strong> reliable annual estimates <\/strong>of <strong>Infant Mortality Rate, Birth Rate, Death Rate and other Fertility &amp; Mortality Indicators<\/strong> at the National and subNational levels.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a<strong> large-scale demographic survey conducted every yea<\/strong>r by the Office of the Registrar General of India in all States\/Union Territories.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Birth Rate:<\/strong> It is live births per 1,000 population, it fell from 21 in 2014 to 18.3 in 2024.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The number declined from<strong> 14.9 to 14.7 in urban areas<\/strong> and from<strong> 20.3 to 20.2 in rural areas.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The highest Birth Rate was observed at<strong> 26.8 in Bihar, <\/strong>whereas <strong>Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands <\/strong>had the <strong>lowest Birth Rate of 9.9.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Death Rate: <\/strong>It is deaths per 1,000 people, it\u00a0 is <strong>down from 6.7 to 6.4.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2024, <strong>Chhattisgarh <\/strong>recorded the highest Death Rate of 8.4, whereas the lowest Death Rate was recorded in <strong>Chandigarh <\/strong>at 3.9.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infant Mortality Rate:<\/strong> The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the number of deaths of children under one year of age per 1,000 live births in a given year.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The present level of IMR (24 infant deaths per thousand live births, for the year 2024) is<strong> less than one-fifth<\/strong> as compared to 1971. In the last ten years, I<strong>MR has witnessed a decline of about 38%.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2024, the maximum IMR was reported in <strong>Chhattisgarh <\/strong>(36) and the minimum in <strong>Manipur <\/strong>(2).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"dbd8db\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #dbd8db;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"528\" height=\"167\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-164.png\" alt=\"sample registration survey 2024\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-74739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-164.png 528w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/05\/image-164-300x95.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives to Curb Infant Mortality in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) <\/strong>entitles all pregnant women and sick infants (up to one year of age) delivering in public health institutions to have free and no-expense delivery, including cesarean section.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It includes free drugs, consumables, free diet during the stay, free diagnostics, free transportation, and free blood transfusion if required.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA)<\/strong> provides pregnant women a fixed day, free of cost, assured and quality antenatal checkup by a Specialist\/Medical Officer on the 9th day of every month.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Days (VHSNDs) <\/strong>are observed for the provision of maternal and child health services and for creating awareness on maternal and child care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) portal <\/strong>is a web-enabled tracking system for pregnant women and newborns to ensure seamless provision of regular and complete services to them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mother and Child Protection (MCP) Cards and Safe Motherhood Booklet<\/strong> are distributed to pregnant women to educate them on diet, rest, danger signs of pregnancy, benefit schemes, and institutional deliveries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mission Indradhanush:<\/strong> It was launched in 2014, aiming to achieve over 90% full immunisation coverage by strengthening routine immunisation services and targeting hard-to-reach populations.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Full immunisation coverage has risen from 62% in 2015 to 98.4% in 2026.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK):<\/strong> Children from 0 to 18 years of age are screened for 32 health conditions (i.e. Diseases, Deficiencies, Defects, and Developmental delays) under RBSK to improve child survival.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs)<\/strong> are established at public health facilities where children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and medical complications are admitted for treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Do You Know?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has eradicated <strong>smallpox, polio <\/strong>and<strong> maternal &amp;
