{"id":74459,"date":"2026-05-21T18:02:41","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T12:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=74459"},"modified":"2026-05-21T18:05:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T12:35:36","slug":"india-italy-strategic-partnership-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/21-05-2026\/india-italy-strategic-partnership-2","title":{"rendered":"India and Italy Ties Upgraded to Special Strategic Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and Italy <strong>upgraded their ties to a special strategic partnership.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>two sides inked 10 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs)<\/strong>, including agreements to boost partnerships in critical minerals, agriculture, maritime transport and marine products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India and Italy rolled out a defence industrial roadmap<\/strong> for the co-development and co-production of military hardware and platforms, including helicopters and marine armament.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They committed to <strong>cooperate on the India\u2013Middle East\u2013Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both nations vowed to expand <strong>annual trade to Euro 20 billion by 2029, <\/strong>from the current bilateral trade of \u20ac14 billion ($15.2 billion).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India-Italy Bilateral Ties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diplomatic relations<\/strong> with Italy were established in 1947 and were elevated to <strong>Strategic Partnership in 2023 <\/strong>as they celebrated the 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Indo-Pacific Region:<\/strong> In 2021, the <strong>\u2018India-Italy-Japan\u2019 trilateral was launched, <\/strong>with an aim to work towards the security, stability, prosperity and multilateralism of the Indo-Pacific region.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is the second trilateral that India has, in the Indo-Pacific region, involving a European country, after the \u2018India-France-Australia\u2019 trilateral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joint Action Plan: <\/strong>Prime Minister and his Italian counterpart unveiled the <strong>Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29 <\/strong>as they met on the sidelines of the <strong>G20 Summit.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a<strong> five-year strategic action plan<\/strong> outlining their vision for collaboration in a <strong>range of key sectors<\/strong> i.e. Defence, Economy, Connectivity, Science and Innovation, Migration and Mobility, Space and Energy transition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Global Forums:<\/strong> Italy joined both the significant initiatives, launched on the margins of the G20 Summit, the <strong>\u2018Global Biofuel Alliance\u2019<\/strong> and the<strong> \u2018India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor\u2019.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Italy has also joined the<strong> \u2018International Solar Alliance\u2019 (ISA),<\/strong> in 2021, which was the year of the Italian Presidency of G20 and co-Presidency of COP26.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic:<\/strong> Italy is India\u2019s 4th largest trading partner in the EU. In 2025, bilateral trade reached \u20ac 14.25 billion with India\u2019s exports at \u20ac 8.55 billion and a balance in favour of India of \u20ac 2.85 billion.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The free trade agreement between the European Union and India paves the way for increased trade and investment in both directions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Diaspora: <\/strong>Indian nationals in Italy are the<strong> largest Indian community in the European Union.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are the seventh largest foreign community in Italy, comprising 3.25% of the foreign nationals residing in Italy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Migration and Mobility Agreement (MMA) was signed in 2023 to facilitate safe and legal migration of workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future outlook : <\/strong>Recent developments show that there is a renewed interest in the relationship from both sides.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and Italy can leverage their strategic positions in the Indian Ocean and in the Mediterranean, respectively, to promote connectivity, stability, energy security, freedom of navigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of Italy for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strategic and Political Importance: <\/strong>Italy is an important member of the European Union, G7, and NATO, making it a valuable partner for India in engaging with Europe and the wider Western world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Economic Significance:<\/strong> Italy is among India\u2019s major trading partners in Europe. Italian companies are known for advanced manufacturing, luxury goods, fashion, design, and precision engineering, which complement India\u2019s industrial growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence and Security Cooperation: <\/strong>Italy has expertise in naval systems, aerospace technology, defence manufacturing, and shipbuilding.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defence cooperation can strengthen India\u2019s maritime security and indigenous defence production capabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renewable Energy and Climate Cooperation: <\/strong>Italy is an important partner in clean energy transition and climate action.
