The fjords were carved out by glaciers, as were the country\u2019s mountains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Although not in the EU, <strong>Norway is part of the European Economic Area and a member of NATO.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The biggest source of national income is the <strong>extraction and export of offshore oil and gas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India &#8211; Norway Bilateral Ties<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and Norway established bilateral relations in <strong>1947<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The India-Nordic Summit<\/strong> format allowed more <strong>regular and structured interactions at Prime Ministerial levels<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first summit was held in<strong> 2018 at Stockholm.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Joint Commission Meeting (JCM)<\/strong> between the Foreign Ministers is the high level mechanism of coordination between the two countries, covering the entire gamut of relations.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Norway has been supporting India\u2019s perusal to become a permanent member<\/strong> of a reformed UN Security Council.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bilateral Trade:<\/strong> It was US $ 1.05 billion in 2024-25 and India exported goods worth US$ 630 million and imported goods worth US$ 420 million.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trade in services has been around<strong> USD 1 billion.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) <\/strong>which includes Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and Liechtenstein, signed a <strong>Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA)<\/strong> in 2024.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Investment:<\/strong> The Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) of Norway has invested close to US$ 28 billion (till 2025) in the Indian capital market.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In addition, FDI inflows from Norway during 2000 to 2025 was US$ 764 million.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arctic\/ Polar:<\/strong> India set up its first permanent research station <strong>\u2018Himadri\u2019<\/strong> in the <strong>Arctic in 2008 at Svalbard, Norway.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) carries out multiple scientific expeditions to the Arctic every year.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has also been an Observer State in the Arctic Council since 2013.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space: <\/strong>ISRO uses Norway&#8217;s Svalbard ground station on commercial terms to receive data from IRS satellites.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>KSAT is also setting up ISRO\u2019s antenna in Svalbard.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of Norway for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Maritime and Blue Economy Cooperation: <\/strong>Norway is a global leader in shipping, fisheries, offshore energy, and ocean management.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India can benefit from Norwegian expertise in sustainable ocean governance, port modernization, and marine technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Security: <\/strong>Norway is one of the world\u2019s major exporters of crude oil and natural gas.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As India\u2019s energy demand rises, Norway can serve as a stable and reliable partner for diversification of energy imports.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic and Investment Relations: <\/strong>Norway is an important investor in India through sectors such as renewable energy, logistics, maritime services, and technology.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global is among the world\u2019s largest sovereign wealth funds with investments in Indian companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2013EFTA Trade Agreement: <\/strong>The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) signed with India in 2024 is expected to enhance trade, investments, and technology transfer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arctic Cooperation: <\/strong>Norway is strategically important for India\u2019s Arctic policy.
