{"id":74038,"date":"2026-05-18T18:33:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=74038"},"modified":"2026-05-18T18:34:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-18T13:04:28","slug":"india-sweden-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/18-05-2026\/india-sweden-relations","title":{"rendered":"India-Sweden Upgrade Ties to Strategic Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ International Relations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and Sweden elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership, during an official visit of PM Modi to Sweden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Highlights of the Visit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PM Modi received <strong>Sweden&#8217;s Royal Order of Polar Star and Commander Grand Cross,<\/strong> the highest recognition and honour that can be conferred upon a head of government.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This marks PM Modi&#8217;s <strong>31st global honour.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Partnership Framework:<\/strong> India and Sweden agreed to institutionalise relations through a Strategic Partnership based on <strong>shared democratic values, innovation, sustainability and research cooperation. <\/strong>The partnership will be guided by <strong>four major pillars:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strategic Dialogue for Stability and Security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next-Generation Economic Partnership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shaping Tomorrow Together \u2013 People, Planet, Health and Resilience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To operationalise the upgraded partnership, the two leaders adopted the <strong>India-Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026-2030<\/strong>, which lays out a roadmap for cooperation across political, economic, technological, security, climate and people-to-people domains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India and Sweden endorsed the joint development of the <strong>India\u2013Sweden Technology and Artificial Intelligence Corridor (SITAC).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both countries agreed to establish an <strong>India\u2013Sweden SME and Start-up Platform<\/strong> to support innovation-driven entrepreneurship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural Diplomacy:<\/strong> Ulf Kristersson and Narendra Modi exchanged commemorative gifts honouring the legacy of <strong>Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India\u2013Sweden Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diplomatic Relations:<\/strong> India and Sweden established diplomatic relations in <strong>1948.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sweden hosted the first<strong> India\u2013Nordic Summit in 2018,<\/strong> strengthening India\u2019s engagement with the Nordic region.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bilateral ties have steadily expanded in trade, innovation, clean technology and education.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Relations: <\/strong>Several Swedish companies operate in India in sectors such as telecommunications, automobiles, clean energy and engineering.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bilateral trade between the two countries reached nearly <strong>USD 7.75 billion in 2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sweden\u2019s cumulative FDI equity inflow into India stood at around <strong>USD 2.59 billion between 2000 and 2024,<\/strong> making Sweden the 22nd largest investor in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Around 280 Swedish companies operate in India, while nearly 75 Indian companies have a business presence in Sweden.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainability Cooperation:<\/strong> India and Sweden jointly launched the <strong>Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT)<\/strong> at the UN Climate Action Summit in<strong> 2019.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LeadIT promotes low-carbon industrial transition and sustainable manufacturing practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Indian Diaspora in Sweden:<\/strong> The Indian diaspora in Sweden is currently estimated at approximately <strong>90,000,<\/strong> which includes around <strong>66,400<\/strong> Indian nationals and many of them are <strong>highly skilled professionals in the IT, fintech, and life sciences sectors.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthening India\u2019s Engagement with Europe:<\/strong> The partnership enhances India\u2019s strategic outreach in Northern Europe and strengthens ties with the European region.
