{"id":73531,"date":"2026-05-12T21:47:11","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T16:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=73531"},"modified":"2026-05-12T21:52:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T16:22:21","slug":"news-in-short-12-05-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/12-05-2026\/news-in-short-12-05-2026","title":{"rendered":"News In Short 12-05-2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Baiga Tribe<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/Tribal Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Children belonging to the <strong>Baiga tribe<\/strong> rescued from bonded labour in Chhattisgarh.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Baiga are an ethnic group found in <strong>central India<\/strong> primarily in the state of <strong>Madhya Pradesh,<\/strong> and in smaller numbers in the surrounding states of <strong>Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The name Baiga means<strong> &#8220;sorcerer- medicine man&#8221;.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Baigas in Chhattisgarh are classified as<strong> Particularly vulnerable tribal group(PVTG) <\/strong>by the Government due to their declining population and low level of literacy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They traditionally practiced shifting cultivation, locally <strong>called \u201cBewar\u201d cultivation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1973, the <strong>Dhebar Commission<\/strong> set up a separate category for <strong>Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs)<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>In 1975,<\/strong> the Union identified 52 tribal groups as PTGs.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In 1993,<\/strong> 23 more groups were added to the list. Later, in 2006, these groups were named PVTGs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PVTGs are a<strong> more vulnerable group<\/strong> among tribal groups in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These groups have primitive traits, geographical isolation, low literacy, a zero to negative population growth rate, and backwardness.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Moreover, they are largely dependent upon hunting for food and a pre-agriculture level of technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Out of more than 700 tribal communities,<\/strong> there are <strong>75 tribal communities identified as PVTGs <\/strong>residing in 18 States and the Union Territory of Andaman\u202fand Nicobar Islands.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As per the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the PVTG population is estimated to be <strong>45.56 lakh.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh<\/strong> are the top three in terms
