{"id":73377,"date":"2026-05-09T18:00:17","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T12:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=73377"},"modified":"2026-05-09T18:00:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T12:30:58","slug":"somnath-temple","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-05-2026\/somnath-temple","title":{"rendered":"Somnath Temple"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/History&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Somnath Swabhiman Parv commemorates <strong>two major historical milestones associated with the Somnath Temple<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>completion of <strong>1,000 years since the first recorded attack<\/strong> on the temple by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026 CE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>75 years<\/strong> since the temple\u2019s post-independence reopening in May 1951.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Somnath<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Prabhas Patan along the Saurashtra coast in Gujrat.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u00a0 is among India\u2019s most sacred pilgrimage centres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong> : The origins of Somnath are deeply embedded in ancient Indian tradition.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The site is closely linked with Lord Shiva and the worship of Chandra, the Moon God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Characteristics<\/strong>: Somnath holds a sacred place as the first among the twelve Aadi Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The temple complex includes the Garbhagriha, Sabha mandap and Nritya mandap.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00a0It rises in grandeur along the Arabian Sea shoreline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The temple is crowned by a 150-foot Shikhar, topped with a 10-tonne Kalash.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rituals like Bilva Pooja attract over 13.77 lakh devotees yearly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Importance<\/strong>: It enshrines one of the most sacred Jyotirlingas mentioned in the Shiva Purana.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is revered for the worship of Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna and Shakti.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Dwadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram places Somnath first among the twelve Jyotirlingas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Attacks: <\/strong>The most turbulent phase of Somnath\u2019s history began in the eleventh century.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In January 1026, Somnath faced its first recorded attack by invaders.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This marked the beginning of a long period during which the temple was repeatedly destroyed between the eleventh and eighteenth centuries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Restoration<\/strong>: Despite repeated destruction, the temple was rebuilt several times by local rulers and devotees.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kumarapala restored the temple in the 12th Century.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The King of Junagarh again rebuilt it in the thirteenth century.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar, the Maratha queen of Indore chose to consecrate a new temple at Somnath in the eighteenth century after yet another destruction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Post independence status:<\/strong> Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel visited the ruins of Somnath in 1947 and resolved to rebuild the temple.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The present temple was constructed in the Kailash Mahameru Prasad architectural style.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The temple, which had been destroyed multiple times by Muslim invaders and the Portuguese, was rebuilt in the Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951.
