{"id":73287,"date":"2026-05-08T18:16:30","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T12:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=73287"},"modified":"2026-05-08T18:17:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T12:47:14","slug":"traffic-accidents-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-05-2026\/traffic-accidents-india","title":{"rendered":"546 Die Every Day in Traffic Accidents: NCRB Data"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the latest report by the <strong>National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB),<\/strong> 1.99 lakh people died in <strong>traffic accidents in 2024,<\/strong> an increase of 0.79% compared to 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Traffic accidents include<\/strong> road accidents, railway accidents, incidents on railway tracks or railway premises, and accidents at railway crossings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Road Accidents:<\/strong> Out of<strong> <\/strong>1.99 lakh traffic-related deaths recorded in 2024, 1.75 lakh (88%) were due to road accidents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The socio-economic costs<\/strong> of road crashes alone amount to around <strong>3.14% of India\u2019s GDP.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Two-wheelers<\/strong> account for most of the fatal road accidents, followed by pedestrians and cars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speeding is the biggest factor<\/strong>, accounting for<strong> 58%<\/strong> of the total road deaths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The top three states in terms of fatalities are <\/strong>Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reasons for Increased Numbers of Road Accidents in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Overspeeding and Reckless Driving: <\/strong>Overspeeding, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, and mobile phone usage while driving are among major causes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poor Road Infrastructure: <\/strong>Badly maintained roads, potholes, inadequate signage, poor lighting, and unsafe road design increase accident risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weak Enforcement of Traffic Rules: <\/strong>Inadequate monitoring and inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws lead to low compliance with safety regulations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of Proper Driver Training: <\/strong>Weak licensing systems and insufficient driver education result in unskilled and irresponsible driving behaviour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rapid Growth of Vehicles and Traffic Congestion: <\/strong>Increasing vehicle ownership without proportional expansion of road infrastructure creates chaotic and unsafe traffic conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weak Emergency and Trauma Care: <\/strong>Delays in medical assistance and inadequate trauma care facilities, especially in rural areas, increase fatalities after accidents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Road Safety Policy India, 2010: <\/strong>It emphasized the need for better road infrastructure, stricter enforcement of traffic rules, enhanced emergency medical services, public awareness campaigns, and improved post-crash care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR)\/ Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD):<\/strong> Centralized system for reporting, managing, and analyzing road accident data to improve safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speedy Assistance to Accident Victims:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Award \u20b925,000 for Good Samaritans who help accident victims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faster compensation: \u20b92.5 lakh for grievous hurt, \u20b95 lakh for death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced compensation for hit-and-run victims: \u20b92 lakh for death, \u20b950,000 for grievous hurt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simplified procedures for third-party insurance, including hired drivers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vehicle Fitness: <\/strong>Old, unfit vehicles contribute to accidents.
