{"id":72773,"date":"2026-05-01T18:27:16","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T12:57:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=72773"},"modified":"2026-05-01T18:27:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T12:57:28","slug":"komagata-maru-incident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/01-05-2026\/komagata-maru-incident","title":{"rendered":"Komagata Maru Incident"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently a Punjabi Singer compared the <strong>1914 Komagata Maru rejection of Indians in Canada<\/strong> with his own sold-out concert to highlight how attitudes have changed over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Komagata Maru Incident<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Komagata Maru (also called Guru Nanak Jahaz) <\/strong>was a Japanese steamship chartered by <strong>Gurdit Singh in 1914<\/strong>, carrying 376 Indians seeking better opportunities in Canada.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early 20th century Punjab faced <strong>rural indebtedness, famines and epidemics and many ex-soldiers<\/strong> and peasants migrated abroad for livelihood.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most passengers were Sikhs, along with Muslims and Hindus, who faced severe restrictions under <strong>Canada\u2019s immigration laws.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On arrival in Vancouver, only 24 were allowed to disembark, and the rest were kept onboard without adequate food, water, or medical aid.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attempts by authorities to <strong>seize the ship were resisted, and a local support group raised funds to challenge the restrictions legally<\/strong>, but the ship was ultimately forced to leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reasons for Passenger Denial&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both India and Canada were under British rule, so Indian passengers believed they had the <strong>right to settle anywhere in the British Empire.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, in 1908 Canada introduced the<strong> \u201ccontinuous journey regulation,\u201d<\/strong> which required immigrants to arrive directly from their country of origin without stops\u2014something practically impossible from India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This rule, influenced by anti-Asian sentiment after the 1907 Vancouver riots led by the Asiatic Exclusion League, was designed to restrict immigration, particularly targeting Asians, including Indians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Return in India&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After being expelled from Vancouver and refused entry at other ports during World War I, the ship was sent back to India.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At <strong>Budge Budge near Kolkata<\/strong>, British authorities tried to send the passengers to Punjab, but they resisted and marched toward the city.
