{"id":72060,"date":"2026-04-22T18:27:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:57:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=72060"},"modified":"2026-04-22T18:32:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:02:03","slug":"food-processing-ecosystem-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/22-04-2026\/food-processing-ecosystem-india","title":{"rendered":"Food Processing Ecosystem in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Economy; Food Processing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s food processing sector has emerged as a critical link between agriculture and industry, driving value addition, improving farmer incomes, and expanding export potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Food Processing Sector&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food processing refers to transformation of raw agricultural materials into consumable products, ranging from simple cleaning to complex industrial manufacturing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It operates at three levels:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Primary<\/strong> processing involves cleaning, grading, and packaging of produce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Secondary<\/strong> processing converts raw inputs into intermediate products such as flour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tertiary<\/strong> processing produces ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook food products.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Importance of the Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food processing enhances shelf life and improves food safety by reducing contamination risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It supports nutrition and convenience, enabling availability of processed and ready-to-eat foods for urban populations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sector strengthens farmer incomes and rural employment by creating demand for agricultural produce and generating jobs across the value chain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sector contributes significantly to the economy, with Gross Value Added increasing from \u20b91.34 lakh crore (2014\u201315) to \u20b92.24 lakh crore (2023\u201324).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It plays a key role in export growth, with processed food exports rising from 13.7% to 20.4% share in agricultural exports (2014\u201315 to 2024\u201325).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Drivers of Growth in Food Processing Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s <strong>demographic dividend <\/strong>and urbanisation are increasing demand for processed foods, with the market projected to grow from USD 263 billion to USD 470 billion by 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Digital transformation<\/strong> has enabled direct farmer-to-market linkages and expansion of e-commerce and food delivery platforms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supportive policies<\/strong> such as 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and schemes like PLISFPI have boosted investment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovation in health-oriented and millet-based products and adoption of agri-tech solutions are improving product diversity and quality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>PLISFPI <\/strong>provides incentives based on incremental sales. It has been a major policy push to strengthen this ecosystem and position India as a global processing hub.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"314\" height=\"197\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/a90d561d-2439-431c-8ef5-d8d196d0f162\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The scheme aims to create global Indian food brands while increasing production and exports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is structured into three components:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Category I<\/strong> focuses on large-scale manufacturing of key segments such as ready-to-eat foods, processed fruits and vegetables, marine products, and mozzarella cheese.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Category II <\/strong>promotes innovation among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), including organic and niche products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Category III<\/strong> supports branding and marketing abroad, with reimbursement up to 50% of expenses subject to limits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dedicated component for millet-based products promotes value addition and diversification.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current State of the Food Processing Sector&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>165 applications have been approved across 274 project locations, indicating strong industry participation.<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"205.88080245800538\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/d8c0c212-c8ff-41e5-aca6-473a8305278f\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Out of 165 approved applications, 69 are MSMEs, showing strong inclusion of small enterprises. MSMEs have received targeted incentives, supporting innovation and decentralised growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investments of about \u20b99,207 crore have been mobilised, with \u20b92,162.55 crore incentives disbursed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processing capacity has increased by 34 lakh metric tonnes per annum, strengthening infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employment generation has reached 3.39 lakh jobs, exceeding the target of 2.5 lakh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Processed food exports grew at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 13.23%, with cumulative exports of \u20b989,053 crore (2021\u20132025).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges faced by the Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The sector faces a <strong>fragmented supply chain<\/strong>, with over 86% of farmers being small and marginal, limiting scale and efficiency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Infrastructure deficits<\/strong>, especially in cold storage, lead to 25\u201330% post-harvest losses, costing about \u20b992,651 crore annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>complex regulatory framework<\/strong> involving multiple agencies increases compliance burden and uncertainty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a <strong>skill gap<\/strong>, with only 3% of the workforce formally trained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited access to finance<\/strong>, particularly for MSMEs, restricts investment in technology and expansion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Issues related to <strong>quality standards and export compliance<\/strong> result in rejection of products in global markets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Environmental concerns such as <strong>plastic packaging and sustainability challenges<\/strong> are increasing regulatory pressure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price volatility in agricultural commodities<\/strong> creates uncertainty in production and pricing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Key schemes include <strong>Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana <\/strong>and <strong>Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises Scheme.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A \u20b92,000 crore <strong>Special Food Processing Fund<\/strong> has been created with <strong>NABARD <\/strong>to support investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developing integrated food processing clusters near production centres.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adoption of technology-driven supply chains using artificial intelligence, blockchain, and Internet of Things.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Financial reforms such as sector-specific credit schemes and credit guarantees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthening quality standardisation and global compliance will enhance
