{"id":71001,"date":"2026-04-07T18:40:49","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=71001"},"modified":"2026-04-07T18:43:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:13:11","slug":"one-health-approach-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/07-04-2026\/one-health-approach-2","title":{"rendered":"One Health Approach for an Interconnected World"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The rising incidence of zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance has highlighted the need for a coordinated One Health approach to address human, animal, and environmental health risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the One Health Approach?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One Health is an <strong>integrated, unifying approach<\/strong> that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the <strong>health of people, animals and ecosystems.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"5c6d4f\" data-has-transparency=\"true\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"622\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-41.png\" alt=\"one health approach\" class=\"has-transparency wp-image-71002\" style=\"--dominant-color: #5c6d4f; aspect-ratio:0.9646472055156227;width:327px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-41.png 600w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-41-289x300.png 289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Evolution of the Concept of One Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The concept gained prominence during the <strong>outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome <\/strong>in <strong>2003\u201304.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was further strengthened during the spread of<strong> Avian Influenza H5N1.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Manhattan Principles <\/strong>formally recognised the linkages between human and animal health and their implications for global economies and food security.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific evidence over time has shown that;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearly <strong>75%<\/strong> of emerging infectious diseases are zoonotic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anthropogenic factors <\/strong>such as land-use change, urbanisation, and global trade drive disease emergence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of One Health Approach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rising Zoonotic Diseases: <\/strong>A large proportion of emerging pathogens originate in animals and spill over to humans. Further increased human encroachment into wildlife habitats has intensified such risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impact of Climate Change:<\/strong> Climate change is altering ecosystems, vector distribution, and disease transmission patterns.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extreme weather events are increasing vulnerabilities in already fragile health systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR):<\/strong> Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in humans, livestock, and agriculture is accelerating AMR.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A cross-sectoral strategy is essential to address this growing global threat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Globalisation of Health Risks: <\/strong>Increased mobility of people and goods has enabled rapid cross-border transmission of diseases. Health security has become a matter of global collective action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Initiatives Strengthening One Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Quadripartite collaboration<\/strong> provides leadership to the One Health approach, comprising;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>World Health Organization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food and Agriculture Organization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>United Nations Environment Programme<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>World Organisation for Animal Health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The One Health Joint Plan of Action (2022): <\/strong>It aims to strengthen surveillance and early warning systems across countries. It also focuses on addressing zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance in a coordinated manner.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The WHO Pandemic Agreement<\/strong> aims to ensure equitable access to vaccines and therapeutics across countries.
