Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>two containers<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> that journeyed<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong> from Russia to India<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> via <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Iran<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color #000000;\"><strong>Origin<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><td><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The legal framework for the INSTC is provided by a<strong> trilateral agreement<\/strong> signed by India, Iran and Russia at the <strong>Euro-Asian Conference on Transport <\/strong>in <strong>2000<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Aim<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><td>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To <strong>reduce the carriage cost <\/strong>between India and Russia by about 30% and reduce the transit time from 40 days by more than half.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The corridor is expected to consolidate the <strong>emerging Eurasian Free Trade Area<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Components<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><td>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Northern and Western Europe \u2013\u2013 the Russian Federation;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Caucasus \u2013\u2013 Persian Gulf (Western route);\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><br><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Central Asia \u2013\u2013 Persian Gulf (Eastern Route);\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Caspian Sea &#8211; -Iran Persian Gulf (Central Route).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Connectivity &amp; Length<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><td>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is a <strong>7,200-km multi-modal transport corridor<\/strong> that combines <strong>road, rail and maritime routes <\/strong>connecting Russia and India via Central Asia and Iran.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It links the Indian Ocean to the Caspian Sea via the Persian Gulf onwards into Russia and Northern Europe.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It offers the<strong> shortest connectivity route<\/strong> between<strong> India and Russia<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ratification<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><td>&#8211; <span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">13 countries ratified this agreement (Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Armenia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkey and Ukraine).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-08a781b26cc2c3915e23c1eeb6f1e612\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>India-Iran:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">India\u2019s investment in the INSTC is exemplified by its involvement in Iran\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Chabahar port<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> and the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>construction of a 500-km Chabahar-Zahedan railway line<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">India recently proposed the Chabahar Port to be included in the INSTC.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once completed, this infrastructure will allow India access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, a prospect strengthened by the Taliban government\u2019s support for the project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A special economic zone around Chabahar will offer Indian companies the opportunity to set up a range of industries<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u201cConnect Central Asia\u201d Policy:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When looked at in sync with the Ashgabat Agreement, the INSTC could be the key to India\u2019s \u201cConnect Central Asia\u2019\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Ashgabat Agreement in 2018.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Defying western sanctions:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The move also signalled India\u2019s involvement in the INSTC alongside <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Russia and Iran<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, both of which are subject to <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>sanctions by Western governments<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Bypassing Pakistan:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 13pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Book Antiqua',serif;\"><span Antiqua',serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The INSTC can shape a north-south transport corridor that can complement the east-west axis of the China-led Belt and Road Initiative
