{"id":70567,"date":"2026-03-31T18:23:42","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T12:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=70567"},"modified":"2026-03-31T18:26:52","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T12:56:52","slug":"iran-nuclear-treaty-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/31-03-2026\/iran-nuclear-treaty-exit","title":{"rendered":"Iranian Parliament Mulls Possible Exit from Nuclear Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As per the Iran\u2019s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Iran\u2019s Parliament is reviewing a possible exit from the <strong>Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The proposed legislation, according to lawmakers, would:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Withdraw Iran from the NPT;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove legal commitments tied to the 2015 nuclear deal;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support cooperation with other countries on civilian nuclear technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Iran <\/strong>is a <strong>signatory to the NPT,<\/strong> which aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons while allowing peaceful nuclear activity under monitoring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was signed in <strong>1968 <\/strong>and entered into<strong> force in 1970,<\/strong> the NPT aims to prevent the <strong>spread of nuclear weapons and promote disarmament.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It divides the world into<strong> nuclear-weapon states (NWS),<\/strong> recognized as possessing nuclear weapons at the time of the treaty&#8217;s signing, and <strong>non-nuclear-weapon states (NNWS),<\/strong> which agree not to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The treaty also requires NWS to pursue disarmament negotiations in good faith.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India, Israel, North Korea and Pakistan<\/strong> have not signed the NPT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) 2015<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Participants:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Iran<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>P5+1: <\/strong>Five permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, UK, U.S.) plus Germany.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>EU:<\/strong> Participated in negotiations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Iran\u2019s Commitments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nuclear Restrictions: <\/strong>Iran agreed <strong>not to produce highly enriched uranium<\/strong> or plutonium for nuclear weapons and to ensure its nuclear facilities focus on <strong>civilian purposes.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Centrifuge Limits:<\/strong> Iran limited the number, type, and level of its centrifuges, and reduced its stockpile of enriched uranium.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Uranium enriched to 5% is for nuclear power;
