Suicide is among the <strong>leading causes of death in this age group<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7.6% of total suicides in 2022 were by students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>States like <strong>Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra<\/strong> report higher suicide rates, often correlating with <strong>higher development levels<\/strong>, while poorer states like Bihar report lower rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Causes of Youth Suicide<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Social Determinants: <\/strong>Suicide is shaped by <strong>family pressure and forced marriages, <\/strong>gender discrimination and patriarchy, caste-based exclusion and discrimination, and economic stress and unemployment.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Forced marriage and relationship restrictions<\/strong> are major triggers among young women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aspirations vs Social Constraints: <\/strong>Modern India presents a contradiction, and creates a <strong>\u2018structural frustration\u2019<\/strong>, especially among educated youth.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Youth aspire for <strong>education, careers, and choice in relationships;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Society imposes <strong>rigid norms on caste, religion, and gender roles;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Legal and Institutional Barriers: <\/strong>Restrictions (formal\/informal) on inter-caste and interfaith marriages, live-in relationships, and same-sex unions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These factors limit <strong>personal autonomy<\/strong>, intensifying distress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gender Dimension: <\/strong>Young women face <strong>double oppression<\/strong> i.e. family control and societal expectations.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Early marriage, domestic violence, and honour norms contribute to suicides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concept of <strong>\u2018honour suicide\u2019<\/strong> (linked to forced conformity) is emerging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Constitutional and Ethical: <\/strong>Suicides driven by social oppression resemble <strong>\u2018honour suicides\u2019<\/strong>, morally comparable to honour killings.
