{"id":69004,"date":"2026-03-14T18:21:42","date_gmt":"2026-03-14T12:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=69004"},"modified":"2026-03-14T18:23:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T12:53:51","slug":"india-services-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/14-03-2026\/india-services-sector","title":{"rendered":"Push for India\u2019s Services Sector\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s services sector has emerged as one of the strongest performers of the economy, playing an increasingly important role in driving growth, productivity, and global integration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Services Performance&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GDP Contribution<\/strong>: According to the World Bank, the share of <strong>services in India\u2019s GDP rose to 49.9% in 2024<\/strong>, which is about 1.5 percentage points above the pre-pandemic average, an increase greater than the global average and the majority of developed economies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exports<\/strong>: India\u2019s services exports have maintained strong momentum in FY2025-26, supported by sustained global demand for Indian services.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over the period April-January 2025-26, services exports are estimated at <strong>USD 348.4 billion. <\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s services exports share in GDP<\/strong> averaged 9.7% during FY23-FY25, marking a notable rise from 7.4% in the pre-pandemic period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Employment<\/strong>: The services sector has also emerged as a major source of employment generation. It accounts for nearly <strong>30% of total employment.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over the past six years, the sector added nearly 40 million jobs, in the post-COVID recovery period, highlighting its role as an important labour market shock absorber.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sectoral Drivers of Services Exports<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the RBI survey, <strong>India\u2019s software services exports grew 7.3% YoY<\/strong> in FY25, with computer services making up <strong>over two-thirds of software exports<\/strong> and BPO remaining the largest ITES component.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Software services <\/strong>account for over <strong>40% of total services exports<\/strong>, growing at 13.5% during FY23\u2013FY25, while professional and management consulting grew 25.9%, increasing its share to 18.3%.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Together, these segments now represent over 65% of services exports, reflecting India\u2019s strength in knowledge-intensive, cross-border services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"a9c8e9\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"307\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-76.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-69005\" style=\"--dominant-color: #a9c8e9; width:510px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-76.png 602w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-76-300x153.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has become a <strong>global hub for Global Capability Centres (GCCs)<\/strong>, hosting over 1,700 centres employing 1.9 million professionals, growing at a 7% CAGR (FY20\u2013FY25).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>GCCs now handle <strong>high-value functions<\/strong> like product development, AI services, cybersecurity, analytics, and engineering, driving knowledge-intensive service exports.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is also leading in <strong>cloud infrastructure and expanding digital capabilities<\/strong>, with data centre capacity set to grow from 1.4 GW (2025) to 8 GW (2030).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rising AI adoption, cloud usage, and innovation\u2014including start-ups, venture funding, and generative AI patents\u2014further reinforce its position as a major exporter of digitally enabled services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives Taken<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Union Budget 2026\u201327 proposes targeted tax reforms for IT services, incentives for cloud and data centres, simplified compliance, and trade facilitation to boost India\u2019s competitiveness in services trade.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u00a0Key measures include:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>IT &amp;
