However, <strong>most countries remain off track<\/strong>, including India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Scenario<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than <strong>one in five (20.7%) children aged 5\u201319 globally<\/strong> are overweight or obese, up from <strong>14.6% in 2010<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By <strong>2040<\/strong>, around <strong>507 million children worldwide<\/strong> are projected to be overweight or obese.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Over 200 million school-age children<\/strong> with high BMI are concentrated in <strong>10 countries<\/strong>. <strong>China, India and the United States<\/strong> each have over 10 million children living with obesity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Childhood obesity increases the risk of <strong>adult diseases<\/strong> such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>By <strong>2040<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>57 million children<\/strong> may show early signs of <strong>cardiovascular disease (high triglycerides)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>43 million children<\/strong> may show signs of <strong>hypertension<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Indian Scenario<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India ranks <strong>second after China<\/strong> in the number of children with high BMI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Estimated figures for <strong>2025<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>41 million children with high BMI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>14 million children living with obesity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Projected Health Risks (2025\u20132040):<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hypertension:<\/strong> 2.99 million \u2192 4.21 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hyperglycaemia: <\/strong>1.39 million \u2192 1.91 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High triglycerides: <\/strong>4.39 million \u2192 6.07 million<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MASLD (earlier NAFLD): <\/strong>8.39 million \u2192 11.88 million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lifestyle and Nutrition Concerns:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>74% of adolescents (11\u201317 years)<\/strong> fail to meet recommended physical activity levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only <strong>35.5% of school-age children<\/strong> receive school meals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>32.6% of infants (1\u20135 months)<\/strong> experience <strong>sub-optimal breastfeeding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f3e8db\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-14.png\" alt=\"indian scenario of obesity\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-68099\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f3e8db; width:489px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-14.png 960w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-14-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-14-768x460.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impact \/ Challenges&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rising Burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): <\/strong>NCDs are the leading cause of death globally, killing over 43 million people annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic and Productivity Loss:<\/strong> The annual economic cost of obesity and being overweight in India in 2019 was $28.95 billion (\u20b91,800 per capita), or 1.02% of India\u2019s GDP. Without sufficient interventions, it is estimated that the economic burden is likely to increase to \u20b94,700 per capita by 2030 (or 1.57% of GDP).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lifestyle and Urbanisation Factors: <\/strong>Obesity risk increases with longer urban exposure;\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1.91 times higher for \u22645 years in urban areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.05 times higher for 6\u201310 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2.40 times higher for more than 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>POSHAN Abhiyaan (National Nutrition Mission): <\/strong>Focuses on improving nutritional outcomes for children, adolescents, and women through convergence of nutrition-related schemes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fit India Movement: <\/strong>Launched to promote physical activity, fitness culture, and behavioural change among citizens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eat Right India: <\/strong>Initiative by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to encourage healthy diets, food safety, and reduction of unhealthy food consumption.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>School Health and Wellness Programme: <\/strong>Promotes health education, physical activity, and lifestyle awareness among school students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion \/ Way Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>World Obesity Atlas 2026<\/strong> highlights that childhood obesity is becoming a <strong>major public health challenge in India<\/strong>.
