Scientists from the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun and the Himachal Pradesh forest department have calculated the density and population of Asiatic black bears in two Protected Areas (PAs) of Himachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><strong>About Asiatic Black Bears<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">The scientists calculated the population density of the bears for <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Darangati Wildlife Sanctuary and Rupi Bhaba.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Names: <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">The Asiatic black bear is also called the <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Himalayan bear, Tibetan bear, or moon bear.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>The Asiatic black bear is one of eight extant species of the bear family<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">: along with the American black bear, the sun bear, the spectacled bear, the brown bear, the polar bear, the sloth bear and the giant panda.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Omnivorous<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">: The Asiatic black bear is omnivorous, eating insects, fruit, nuts, bees and honey, small mammals, and birds as well as carrion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Habitat<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">: Asiatic black bears live predominantly in forested areas, especially in hills and mountainous areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Distribution<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">: Asiatic black bears are found over a wide area of southern Asia.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">They occur along the mountains from <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Afghanistan, through Pakistan and northern India, Nepal, Sikkim, and Bhutan, into Burma and northeastern China<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>They are also found in southeastern Russia, and on Taiwan and the Japanese<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> islands of Honshu and Shikoku.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>The bears are found in 83 protected areas of India<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> spread across five states and 2 Union Territories in the Himalayas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>It is one of the large carnivore species<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> having <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>negative interactions<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> with humans in the Indian Himalayas.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>IUCN red list<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\">: It has been categorised as <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Vulnerable<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> under the International Union for Conservation of Nature\u2019s Red List of Threatened Species and is also listed under Appendix I of CITES and <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Schedule I<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>Methods used to determine the population status<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"> of Asiatic black bears in India have been limited to <\/span><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><strong>questionnaires, sign surveys and genetic sampling using hair samples<\/strong><\/span><span
