{"id":66739,"date":"2026-02-14T18:32:40","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T13:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=66739"},"modified":"2026-02-16T12:07:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T06:37:24","slug":"panchsheel-pact-border-china-cds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/14-02-2026\/panchsheel-pact-border-china-cds","title":{"rendered":"India believed that Panchsheel Pact settled Border with China: CDS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) mentioned that India believed the <strong>1954 Panchsheel Agreement<\/strong> effectively addressed the northern boundary question, even though China viewed it differently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Panchsheel Agreement&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1954, India recognised Tibet as part of China, and both countries signed the <strong>Panchsheel Agreement.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Panchsheel Agreement<\/strong> stated the five principles as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mutual respect for each other&#8217;s territorial integrity and sovereignty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mutual non-aggression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mutual non-interference in each other&#8217;s internal affairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Equality and cooperation for mutual benefit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peaceful co-existence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was designed to promote trade and friendly relations, forming the basis of the bilateral ties.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With this, India assumed that it had settled its <strong>northern border.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In 2025<\/strong> the Chinese President underscored that Panchsheel must be cherished and promoted by the two countries.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It came as India and China reset their ties and PM Modi visited China after seven years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The India-China Borders&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India considers the <strong>Line of Actual Control (LAC)<\/strong> to be <strong>3,488 km long,<\/strong> while the Chinese consider it to be only around<strong> 2,000 km.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It is divided into<\/strong> <strong>three sectors<\/strong>: the eastern sector which spans<strong> Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim<\/strong>, the middle sector in <strong>Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh,<\/strong> and the western sector in <strong>Ladakh.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Western Sector or Aksai Chin Sector:<\/strong> The region is claimed by the Chinese government <strong>post-1962 war<\/strong> as an autonomous part of the Xinjiang region which was originally a part of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Middle Sector:<\/strong> It is the less disputed section of the Indo-China border but the <strong>recent Doklam standoff and Nathu La Pass trading issues<\/strong> have brought distress at all levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eastern Sector or Arunachal Pradesh:<\/strong><strong>McMahon Line<\/strong> had differentiated India and China in this sector but in the 1962 war the People\u2019s Liberation Army covered 9000 sq. km. area.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The announcement of a unilateral ceasefire made them step back on the international borderline.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, China has been claiming that area as their own and recently they have started to <strong>claim the whole of Arunachal Pradesh <\/strong>as their own.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d2d2c1\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"813\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/02\/image-69.png\" alt=\"panchsheel agreement\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-66740\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d2d2c1; Despite tensions, economic ties continue to grow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ongoing Mechanisms: <\/strong>Despite tensions, mechanisms like the Special Representatives (SR) and Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) have been in place to address the boundary issue.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recent Developments:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2024 Disengagement: <\/strong>India and China announced successful disengagement in eastern Ladakh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>October 2024 Meeting: <\/strong>PM Modi and President Xi Jinping emphasized &#8220;mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutual sensitivity.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2025 both Nations resumed direct flights and the Indian PM also visited China for the SCO summit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Areas of Concern<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ongoing Border Tensions:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The unresolved border dispute spans over 2,000 miles, marked by frequent clashes that have strained the relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Military Standoff and Infrastructure Build-up: <\/strong>Large-scale troop deployment, rapid infrastructure construction, and militarisation along the LAC by both sides have increased the risk of escalation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>China\u2013Pakistan Nexus: <\/strong>Deepening strategic cooperation between China and Pakistan, especially under the China\u2013Pakistan Economic Corridor (part of the Belt and Road Initiative) which passes through the Indian territory of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade Imbalance: <\/strong>India faces a significant trade deficit with China, with heavy dependence on Chinese imports in sectors such as electronics, APIs (pharmaceuticals), telecom equipment, and solar panels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>China\u2019s growing presence in the Indian Ocean Region: Sri Lanka: <\/strong>China\u2019s presence at Hambantota Port and investments in an oil refinery raise concerns in India.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Nepal: <\/strong>China\u2019s investments in infrastructure (e.g., Pokhara airport) challenge India\u2019s strategic position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bangladesh: <\/strong>China\u2019s growing influence, including loan agreements, threatens India\u2019s regional influence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Myanmar:<\/strong> China\u2019s deepening ties with Myanmar, including the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, strengthen its presence in India\u2019s backyard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Efforts to Address these concerns<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthening Military Preparedness:<\/strong> Enhanced troop deployment and infrastructure along the LAC, induction of advanced weapons systems, and improved surveillance in border areas like Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategic Partnerships in Indo-Pacific: <\/strong>Active participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) and deeper defence cooperation with the US, Japan, Australia, and France.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology &amp;
