{"id":64599,"date":"2026-01-19T20:11:03","date_gmt":"2026-01-19T14:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=64599"},"modified":"2026-01-20T12:02:09","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T06:32:09","slug":"power-discoms-post-profit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-01-2026\/power-discoms-post-profit","title":{"rendered":"Power Distribution Utilities Post Profit After Years of Losses"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Energy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India\u2019s power distribution utilities<\/strong> have recorded a <strong>collective Profit After Tax (PAT) of \u20b92,701 crore in FY 2024\u201325.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The distribution utilities <strong>have been reporting PAT losses<\/strong> for the past several years since unbundling and <strong>corporatization of State Electricity Boards.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>This marks a new chapter <\/strong>for the distribution sector and is a result of several steps that have been taken to redress the concerns of the distribution sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Initiatives in the Distribution Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS):<\/strong> Enhancing financial viability through infrastructure modernization and accelerated smart metering.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Additional Prudential Norms:<\/strong> Linking access to finance for Power sector Utilities to achievement against performance benchmarks to promote fiscal and operational discipline.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Amendments to Electricity Rules:<\/strong> Enforcing timely cost adjustments, prudent tariff structures, and transparent subsidy accounting to ensure full cost recovery.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electricity Distribution (Accounts and Additional Disclosure) Rules, 2025: <\/strong>Introducing uniform accounting and enhanced transparency across Distribution utilities for improved financial governance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Late Payment Surcharge Rules: <\/strong>Enforcing legal contracts through timely payments in the power sector thereby supporting investment in new RE projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Power Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is the<strong> third-largest producer and consumer<\/strong> of electricity in the world, with an installed capacity of <strong>476 GW as of June 2025.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-dominant-color=\"e5e9ee\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #e5e9ee;\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"310\" height=\"302\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-81.png\" alt=\"india\u2019s power sector\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-64600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-81.png 310w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-81-300x292.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 310px) 100vw, 310px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India ranks fourth globally <\/strong>in renewable energy installed capacity, fourth in wind power, and third in solar power as of 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electricity consumption<\/strong> remains led by industry at 41.8%, followed by households at 24.3%, agriculture at 17%, and commercial use at 8.3%.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India met a record peak demand of 250 GW <\/strong>in June 2025, highlighting the scale of demand growth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India achieved 100% village electrification<\/strong> by 2018 and has since connected more than 2.8 crore households to the grid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns of Power Sector<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High transmission and distribution losses: <\/strong>Power theft, inadequate metering, and outdated infrastructure lead to Transmission &amp; Distribution (T&amp;D) losses well above global standards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel supply and energy security challenges: <\/strong>Coal shortages, logistical constraints, and rising dependence on imported coal and gas expose the power sector to global price volatility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Renewable energy integration constraints: <\/strong>The growing share of solar and wind power poses challenges related to intermittency, lack of energy storage and grid balancing issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Inadequate transmission and grid infrastructure: <\/strong>Transmission networks have not expanded in pace with generation capacity, particularly in renewable-rich regions, causing congestion and inefficient power evacuation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rising demand and peak power shortage: <\/strong>Rapid growth in electricity demand driven by urbanisation, industrialisation, climate-induced cooling needs, and EV adoption has increased pressure on peak capacity and grid stability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Solar Mission (NSM): <\/strong>It was launched in 2010, it has set ambitious targets for solar capacity installation, including grid-connected and off-grid solar power projects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF): <\/strong>It was established to support research and innovation in clean energy technologies and projects that help in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National Wind Energy Mission:<\/strong> Focuses on the development and expansion of wind energy in India.
