{"id":64447,"date":"2026-01-16T18:25:48","date_gmt":"2026-01-16T12:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=64447"},"modified":"2026-01-17T12:15:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-17T06:45:03","slug":"road-fatalities-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-01-2026\/road-fatalities-report","title":{"rendered":"Report on Severity of Road Accident Fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Governance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the NGO SaveLIFE Foundation released the <strong>joint report on India\u2019s top 100 districts in terms of severity of road accident fatalities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Uttar Pradesh<\/strong> accounted for most of the top 20 districts in fatalities.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tamil Nadu has 19<\/strong> \u201csevere\u201d districts in terms of fatalities, followed by 11 districts in Maharashtra, nine districts in Karnataka and eight in Rajasthan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Most accidents are concentrated in known locations,<\/strong> such as specific road stretches, crash-prone spots, and police station areas.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>63% of the total road crash fatalities<\/strong> occur outside of the National Highways.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Around 54% of all fatalities<\/strong> were reported on<strong> 18 target corridors <\/strong>of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and state Public Works Department (PWD) roads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Factors Responsible: 59%<\/strong> of all road accident fatalities <strong>do not involve any traffic violation<\/strong>, indicating that <strong>road engineering<\/strong> is one of the biggest contributory factors for deaths.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rear-end, head-on and pedestrian crashes were responsible for <strong>72% of all fatalities.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On violations contributing to crashes, speeding accounted for 1<strong>9% of deaths, <\/strong>followed by <strong>rash driving (7%) and dangerous overtaking (3%).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recommendations:&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NHAI and state PWDs should <strong>conduct a comprehensive Road Safety Survey <\/strong>on each corridor and identify the prevalence of engineering issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has recommended <strong>upgrading the critical police stations with adequate manpower<\/strong> for undertaking enforcement activities, auditing all <strong>108 ambulances<\/strong> for compliance with the <strong>National Ambulance code.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Existing government schemes<\/strong> must be utilised effectively, with <strong>better coordination among key departments <\/strong>\u2014 police, hospitals, and road agencies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The current budget<\/strong> should be aligned for engineering, enforcement resources and health capacity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Road Accidents in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India ranks first<\/strong> globally in terms of the number of annual road accident fatalities.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Its numbers are far ahead of<strong> second and third-ranked countries:<\/strong> China accounts for just 36% of India\u2019s total road deaths, and the United States for 25%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of road accident fatalities in India<strong> rose 2.3% to over 1.77 lakh in 2024,<\/strong> resulting in the death of <strong>485 persons every day.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>As per the World Road Statistics 2024,<\/strong> the fatality rate per lakh population is 4.3 in China, and 12.76 in the United States of America, as compared to India, where it is 11.89.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Do you know?<\/strong><br><br>&#8211; <strong>In September 2020,<\/strong> the UN General Assembly launched the <strong>Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030 <\/strong>which aims to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries by<strong>at least 50% by 2030.<\/strong><br>&#8211; The 2nd Global High-Level Conference on Road Safety was held in <strong>Brazil<\/strong>, which declared <strong>2011-2020 as the 1st decade of action for Road Safety<\/strong>.&nbsp;<br>a. In the <strong>Brasilia Declaration<\/strong>, the participating countries set targets under the <strong>Sustainable Development Goals<\/strong> and pledged to reduce road crash <strong>fatalities by 50% in the next 5 years.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Road Safety Policy India, 2010: <\/strong>It emphasized the need for better road infrastructure, stricter enforcement of traffic rules, enhanced emergency medical services, public awareness campaigns, and improved post-crash care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electronic Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR)\/ Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD):<\/strong> Centralized system for reporting, managing, and analyzing road accident data to improve safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speedy Assistance to Accident Victims:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Award \u20b925,000 for Good Samaritans who help accident victims.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faster compensation: \u20b92.5 lakh for grievous hurt, \u20b95 lakh for death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhanced compensation for hit-and-run victims: \u20b92 lakh for death, \u20b950,000 for grievous hurt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simplified procedures for third-party insurance, including hired drivers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vehicle Fitness: <\/strong>Old, unfit vehicles contribute to accidents.
