{"id":63845,"date":"2026-01-09T17:49:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T12:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=63845"},"modified":"2026-01-09T17:50:31","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T12:20:31","slug":"eam-visit-to-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-01-2026\/eam-visit-to-europe","title":{"rendered":"EAM Visit to Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar\u2019s <strong>first official visit for 2026 began in Europe, <\/strong>with a visit to <strong>Paris and Luxembourg,<\/strong> against the <strong>backdrop of major shifts in global politics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Paris, the Minister met his French, German and Polish counterparts for the <strong>India-Weimar Triangle meeting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong> Weimar Triangle format<\/strong> was launched in 1991 as an initiative of <strong>Germany and it includes France and Poland.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was the first time <strong>a non-European partner<\/strong> had been invited to the Weimar Triangle meeting format at the Foreign Minister level.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India&#8217;s inclusion marks recognition of the country as a <strong>critical geopolitical actor essential to European strategic calculations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the coming weeks<strong>, India is set to host several top leaders<\/strong> including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and top leaders from the European Union, <strong>highlighting India\u2019s growing engagement with Europe.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The external affairs minister said<strong> Europe is an important player in global politics <\/strong>and it is necessary that India strengthens its relationship with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India-EU Relations&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Political cooperation:<\/strong> India-EU relations date to the early<strong> 1960s,<\/strong> and a cooperation agreement signed in <strong>1994 <\/strong>took the bilateral relationship beyond trade and economic cooperation.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The first India-EU Summit, in 2000<\/strong>, marked a landmark in the evolution of the relationship.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the <strong>5th India-EU Summit at The Hague in 2004<\/strong>, the relationship was upgraded to a <strong>\u2018Strategic Partnership\u2019.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic cooperation :<\/strong> India\u2019s bilateral trade in goods with the<strong> EU was USD 137.41 billion in 2023-24<\/strong>, making it the largest trading partner of India for goods.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>EU is India\u2019s largest trading partner<\/strong> for goods, 17% of India\u2019s exports go to the EU and 9% of EU exports come to India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Negotiations: Its <\/strong>objective is to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement covering goods, services, investments, and geographical indications.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The EU and India are working to announce a <strong>\u2018Free Trade\u2019 Agreement (FTA) <\/strong>during the visit of E.U. leaders Republic Day later this month.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other areas of cooperation:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The India-EU Water Partnership (IEWP), <\/strong>established in 2016, aims to enhance technological, scientific, and policy frameworks in water management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In 2020<\/strong>, there was an <strong>agreement for research and development cooperation<\/strong> in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy between the <strong>European Atomic Energy Community and the Government of India.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India and the EU established the <strong>Trade and Technology Council (TTC)<\/strong> in 2023. The TTC is a forum for the two parties to collaborate on trade, technology, and security. The TTC&#8217;s goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India\u2019s Two Levels of Engagement<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>EU as a bloc: <\/strong>Regular summits, strategic dialogues on trade, tech, security, foreign policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bilateral with major EU members:<\/strong> Deepening ties with France, Germany, Nordic and Eastern European countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Factors Shaping India-Europe Relations:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Geopolitical Shifts and Strategic Autonomy:<\/strong> Return of war in Europe (Russia\u2013Ukraine) and the global erosion of multilateralism.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Europe is seeking greater strategic autonomy from the US especially post-Trump era.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India aims to maintain a multipolar world order while diversifying its partnerships beyond the US, Russia, and China.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>US Uncertainty:<\/strong> The Trump administration&#8217;s unpredictability regarding European security commitments has forced Europe to seek alternative partnerships and alliances. India, as a stable democracy with proven reliability, becomes strategically valuable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Economic Cooperation: <\/strong>EU is one of India\u2019s largest trade and investment partners.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India and EU are keen on concluding India\u2013EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Investment Agreement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IMEC (India\u2013Middle East\u2013Europe Corridor) provides opportunities for strategic connectivity and trade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technology and Digital Sovereignty:<\/strong> Both have the shared interest in promoting digital technologies as public goods.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India can benefit from Europe\u2019s strengths in deep tech, semiconductors, and digital
