{"id":62536,"date":"2025-12-24T18:29:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T12:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=62536"},"modified":"2025-12-24T18:29:22","modified_gmt":"2025-12-24T12:59:22","slug":"national-consumer-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-12-2025\/national-consumer-day","title":{"rendered":"National Consumer Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Governance\/GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently, National Consumer Day was observed in India to highlight the significance of consumer rights and the broader framework of consumer protection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>National Consumer Rights Day and Consumer Protection Act&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was established in India to commemorate the enactment of the <strong>Consumer Protection Act of 1986<\/strong>, which was approved by the President of India on December 24, 1986.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since then, <strong>24th December<\/strong> has been celebrated as <strong>National Consumer Day.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Consumer Protection Act, 2019 replaced the Consumer Protection Act, 1986<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was enacted to protect consumer rights, address grievances related to goods and services, and ensure fair treatment and access to justice for consumers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Features&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Section 2(28) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019<\/strong> defines \u201cmisleading advertisement\u201d in relation to any product or service which is falsely describes a product or service, gives false guarantees or misleads consumers about its nature or quality, makes deceptive implied claims amounting to unfair trade practice, or deliberately hides important information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"d4dee5\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"489\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-130.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-62539\" style=\"--dominant-color: #d4dee5; width:344px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-130.png 489w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/12\/image-130-300x237.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Section 21 of the Consumer Protection Act empowers the CCPA<\/strong> to act against false or misleading advertisements by directing traders, manufacturers, endorsers, advertisers or publishers to discontinue or modify such advertisements if they are found harmful to consumers or violative of consumer rights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA)<\/strong><br><br>&#8211; It is India\u2019s <strong>apex consumer watchdog<\/strong>. It was established under Section 10(1) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and became operational on 24th July 2020.<br>&#8211; It is tasked with regulating matters related to the violation of consumer rights, unfair trade practices, and false or misleading advertisements that are prejudicial to the interests of consumers as a class and the public at large.<br>&#8211; It can <strong>penalise manufacturers or endorsers of false or misleading advertisements <\/strong>with fines up to \u20b910 lakh and imprisonment up to two years, which may increase to \u20b950 lakh and five years for repeat offences, and can also ban endorsers from future promotions for up to one year, extendable to three years for subsequent violations.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other related steps&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Department of Consumer Affairs in India has strengthened consumer protection through multiple initiatives:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Consumer Welfare Fund<\/strong> \u2013 Provides financial support to States\/UTs to promote consumer protection, with funding through corpus interest. Rs.38.68 crore released in 2024\u201325.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>e-Jagriti Platform<\/strong> \u2013 Launched in January 2025, it integrates multiple grievance systems for filing, tracking, and resolving complaints digitally.
