{"id":62148,"date":"2025-12-19T18:10:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T12:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=62148"},"modified":"2025-12-19T18:10:34","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T12:40:34","slug":"liberation-day-of-goa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-12-2025\/liberation-day-of-goa","title":{"rendered":"Goa Liberation Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/Post-Independence History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>December 19<\/strong> marks the day Goa was liberated from <strong>Portuguese rule <\/strong>and formally <strong>integrated into India in 1961.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Course of the Invasion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First capture (1510):<\/strong> Albuquerque seized Goa with help from the local chieftain Timoji.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loss of Goa:<\/strong> Adil Shah\u2019s forces recaptured Goa during the monsoon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Final conquest (November 1510):<\/strong> Albuquerque returned with reinforcements and decisively defeated Bijapur forces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reasons for Portuguese Success:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Superior naval power and artillery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weak internal control of the Bijapur Sultanate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local support from discontented groups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effective leadership of Albuquerque<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impact:\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Goa became the capital of Portuguese India (Estado da \u00cdndia).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It marked the beginning of European territorial colonialism in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Goa emerged as a centre of trade, administration, and Christianity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Goa <\/strong>was the first Indian Territory to be captured by European power and last to get its independence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Following the country\u2019s independence in <strong>1947<\/strong>, the regime had<strong> major challenges to tackle:<\/strong> the integration of regions like Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad among others.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The India government made several diplomatic outreach to persuade Portugal to hand over Goa peacefully.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Portugal, which ruled Goa for 451 years, rejected all such requests.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This led to the Goa Liberation Movement, with significant participation from local leaders and the public.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Operation Vijay<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Operation Vijay was launched by the<strong> Indian Armed Forces<\/strong> to <strong>annex Goa and amalgamate it with the rest of India<\/strong> during Jawaharlal Nehru\u2019s tenure as Prime Minister.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The operation lasted for over 36 hours and involved coordinated strikes by the Indian Armed Forces across air, sea, and land.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outcome: <\/strong>Portuguese forces surrendered on 19 December 1961, leading to Goa\u2019s liberation along with Daman and Diu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>On 30 May 1987,<\/strong> the Union Territory was split, and Goa was made India\u2019s twenty-fifth state, with Daman and Diu remaining Union Territories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Leaders in Goa Liberation Movement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tristao de Braganca Cunha: <\/strong>TB Cunha is known as the <strong>\u201cFather of Goan Nationalism\u201d<\/strong> for launching the first movement to <strong>end Portuguese rule in Goa.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He founded the <strong>Goa Congress Committee<\/strong> and succeeded in getting it affiliated with the Indian National Congress.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Juliao Menezes:<\/strong> Menezes set up the publication Gomantak Praja Mandal with the aim of promoting nationalism in the region.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Libia Lobo Sardesai: <\/strong>From 1955 to 1961, she operated an underground radio station called Voice of Freedom, which broadcast messages across Portuguese-ruled Goa.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After Goa\u2019s liberation, Lobo became the first Director of Tourism for Goa, Daman, and Diu;
