{"id":61956,"date":"2025-12-17T18:11:30","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T12:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=61956"},"modified":"2025-12-17T18:12:33","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T12:42:33","slug":"global-value-chain-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/17-12-2025\/global-value-chain-report","title":{"rendered":"Global Value Chain Development Report 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong> Global Value Chain Development Report 2025<\/strong> has been released by the <strong>World Trade Organization (WTO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Global Value Chain (GVC)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A Global Value Chain (GVC) refers to<\/strong> the full range of activities involved in producing a good or service, when these activities are spread across multiple countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>These activities include: <\/strong>Design &amp; R&amp;D, Sourcing of raw materials, Production and assembly, Logistics and distribution, Marketing, sales &amp; after-sales services.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Each stage adds value, and different countries participate in different stages based on their comparative advantage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Example:<\/strong> A smartphone may be designed in the US, components manufactured in East Asia, assembled in Vietnam\/India, and sold globally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Findings of the Report<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recent Trends:<\/strong> GVCs remain central to international trade, accounting for about <strong>46.3% of global trade<\/strong> in value-added terms, only slightly below the 2022 peak.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Firms and governments are prioritizing resilience e.g., diversification of suppliers alongside efficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India Specific Findings: <\/strong>India, alongside the Philippines and several African economies, has strengthened its position in business-process and digital service exports.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has risen to become <strong>part of the top 10 value adding economies<\/strong> since the onset of the pandemic, with a share of <strong>2.8% of global Domestic Value Added (DVA) in exports in 2024.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This reflects <strong>India\u2019s growing role in digital trade and services <\/strong>within global value chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shifts in GVC Structure: Services <\/strong>have outpaced goods in GVC participation,\u00a0 accounting for more than <strong>one-third of value added<\/strong> in manufacturing exports.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Regional Reconfiguration: Asia, Europe, and North America<\/strong> remain dominant in GVC trade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reshoring and Regionalization Trends: <\/strong>Major economies including China, the United States, and the European Union are actively reducing dependence on foreign value-added in domestic consumption.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This reshoring trend reflects shifting priorities toward supply chain security and reduced reliance on external sources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electric Vehicle (EV) Value Chains: <\/strong>The rise of EV production is reshaping automotive supply chains. China accounted for a large share of global EV output as of 2023.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Critical minerals (e.g., lithium, cobalt) are central to EV supply, offering new opportunities for resource-rich developing economies, but also posing risks due to supply concentration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Technological Change &amp;
