{"id":61687,"date":"2025-12-15T19:18:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T13:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=61687"},"modified":"2025-12-17T11:40:38","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T06:10:38","slug":"icmr-demow-model-snakebite-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/15-12-2025\/icmr-demow-model-snakebite-prevention","title":{"rendered":"ICMR Adopts Demow Model for National Snakebite Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Demow Model from eastern Assam\u2019s Siva sagar<\/strong> has been chosen as one of the successful systems of <strong>snakebite prevention and management<\/strong> under a project sanctioned by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The project, called the <strong>Zero Snakebite Death Initiative<\/strong>: Community Empowerment and Engagement for Mitigation of Snakebite Envenoming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Snakebite Envenoming&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The snakebite envenoming (poisoning from snake bites) was classified by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-04-2023\/75-years-of-the-who\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-04-2023\/75-years-of-the-who\">World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/a><\/strong> as a high-priority neglected tropical disease.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An estimated <strong>1.8 \u2013 2.7 million <\/strong>people worldwide are envenomed annually.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Snake Bites in India: <\/strong>In India, around <strong>90% of snake bites <\/strong>are caused by the <strong>&#8216;big four&#8217;<\/strong> among the crawlers &#8211; <strong>common krait, Indian cobra, Russell&#8217;s viper and saw scaled viper.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In India, around<strong> 58,000 deaths<\/strong> occur of an estimated 3-4 million snake bites annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snakebite deaths are more common <strong>(48%) during the southwest monsoon (June-September).<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Close to 70% of snakebite deaths occur in nine states,<\/strong> including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India<\/strong> has more than<strong> 310 species of snakes<\/strong>.
