Also, coal contributes about <strong>75% of total electricity production in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>&nbsp;Within renewables:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solar power:<\/strong> 127.33 GW.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wind power:<\/strong> 53.12 GW.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>During FY 2025\u201326<\/strong> India added 28 GW of non-fossil capacity and 5.1 GW of fossil-fuel capacity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chile\u2019s Model<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In comparison, coal\u2019s share of Chile\u2019s electricity generation fell from <strong>43.6% to 17.5% during 2016-24.\u00a0<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today, renewables (especially wind and solar) <strong>make up over 60% of the country\u2019s power mix.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Measures Taken by the Government:&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The government imposed <strong>stringent emission standards<\/strong> on coal plants, raising construction and compliance costs by <strong>30%<\/strong>. <strong>Competitive auctions for wind and solar power helped push renewables.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chile has also aggressively built <strong>out energy storage systems<\/strong> to stabilise the grid, and committed to <strong>phase out all coal by 2040.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All this makes the case that <strong>even economies with coal dependence<\/strong> can accelerate a transition.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Challenges in Replicating the Model:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As compared to India <strong>coal occupies a smaller share of Chile\u2019s energy,<\/strong> giving it fewer plants to shut down and a smaller dependent workforce.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The transition was also <strong>enabled by a political environment<\/strong> that allowed swift, market reforms following privatisation of key sectors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Green Commitments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As part of the updated NDC submitted to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in 2022:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has committed to reducing <strong>its emissions intensity by 45% by 2030 <\/strong>(compared to 2005 levels),&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>achieving 50% of cumulative electric power capacity<\/strong> from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These targets also contribute to <strong>India\u2019s long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-10-2024\/national-electricity-plan-transmission\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-10-2024\/national-electricity-plan-transmission\">National Electricity Plan (NEP)<\/a><\/strong> envisions significant growth in <strong>renewable energy generation by 2032<\/strong>, with solar power expected to <strong>contribute 50% of that growth.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Suggestions for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>TERI has suggested that India <strong>could phase out coal power entirely by 2050 to meet its net zero goals.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the transition to this target, there could be an <strong>incremental scaling down of coal, improved efficiency and decommissioning.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Three sets of action that India can opt for:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India should <strong>focus on tackling the limitations faced by renewable energy <\/strong>sources. The effort would also be aided by a drive to electrify transport, industry and households.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reform of markets and regulation<\/strong> to disincentivise coal, for example through carbon pricing, removal of coal subsidies, clean dispatch rules and power procurement contracts that favour renewables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Providing robust support for workers<\/strong> through reskilling and alternative livelihoods.
