{"id":61051,"date":"2025-12-08T18:36:51","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T13:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=61051"},"modified":"2025-12-13T10:33:46","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T05:03:46","slug":"unesco-20th-ich-committee-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-12-2025\/unesco-20th-ich-committee-session","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO\u2019s 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/ History and Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India is hosting the 20th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, 2025 in Red Fort complex, New Delhi.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This will be the <strong>first time<\/strong> that India hosts the ICH Committee session and <strong>the Ministry of Culture and Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA)<\/strong> are the nodal agencies for hosting the Session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Intangible cultural heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Intangible cultural heritage,<\/strong> includes the practices, knowledge, expressions, objects, and spaces that communities see as part of their cultural identity.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passed down over generations, this heritage evolves, strengthening cultural identity and appreciation of diversity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Historical Background: <\/strong>For the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO adopted the <strong>2003 Convention<\/strong> during its 32nd General Conference in Paris.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India ratified the convention in <strong>2005.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of Intangible Cultural Heritage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preserves Cultural Identity and Continuity:<\/strong> Intangible heritage anchors communities to their roots, reinforces identity, and strengthens belonging across generations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Promotes Social Cohesion and Harmony:<\/strong> Shared cultural practices create a sense of collective memory and mutual respect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supports Livelihoods: <\/strong>Protecting ICH helps sustain rural economies, promotes cultural tourism, and creates employment opportunities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preserves Traditional Knowledge Systems: <\/strong>Indigenous ecological knowledge, healing practices, agricultural wisdom, and craftsmanship offer sustainable solutions relevant for contemporary challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Intergenerational Learning:<\/strong> ICH carries values, ethics, local histories, and skills that enrich curricula, build cultural literacy, and strengthen intergenerational bonding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Boosts Cultural Diplomacy and Soft Power: <\/strong>Yoga, classical arts, festivals, and traditional crafts enhance India\u2019s global cultural presence, build goodwill, and strengthen international relationships.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Functions of the Intergovernmental Committee<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage<strong> advances the objectives of the 2003 Convention <\/strong>and ensures their <strong>effective implementation<\/strong> across Member States.
