{"id":59846,"date":"2025-11-25T20:17:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T14:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=59846"},"modified":"2025-11-26T13:07:02","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T07:37:02","slug":"international-day-for-elimination-of-violence-against-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/25-11-2025\/international-day-for-elimination-of-violence-against-women","title":{"rendered":"International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/Social Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was recently observed with the theme <strong>\u201cUNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 1993, the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, laying the foundation for global action.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2000, the UN officially designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, encouraging governments, international bodies, and NGOs to hold annual awareness activities worldwide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Present status and Issues&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/21-11-2022\/violence-against-women-and-girls-and-indias-progress\">Violence against women<\/a> and girls is one of the most widespread human rights violations, with nearly one in three women globally experiencing physical or sexual violence, and one woman or girl killed every 10 minutes by an intimate partner or family member.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online abuse is rapidly growing, targeting women in politics, activism, and journalism.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The rise of such violence is driven by weak regulation, lack of legal recognition, impunity of platforms, evolving AI-enabled abuse, anti-gender equality movements, anonymity of perpetrators, and limited support for victims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Fight to End Violence Against Women: Laws and Legislations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>National Commission for Women (NCW), established in January 1992<\/strong>: Monitors legal safeguards, handles complaints online and offline, and runs a 24\u00d77 domestic violence helpline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDVA): <\/strong>Defines domestic violence broadly, covering physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>POSH Act, 2013:<\/strong> Ensures workplace safety through Internal Committees (ICs) and Local Committees (LCs).
