Intervention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently, the Assam government has announced that a broad consensus has been reached on most of the recommendations made under <strong>Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, 1985.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Assam Accord (1985)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was signed on <strong>August 15, 1985,<\/strong> between the Government of India, the All Assam Students\u2019 Union (AASU), and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP).\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It marked the <strong>end of a six-year-long anti-foreigner agitation<\/strong> in Assam (1979\u20131985), which was driven by concerns over large-scale illegal immigration from Bangladesh and its impact on the state\u2019s demography, culture, and economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Provisions of the Accord<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cut-off Date for Citizenship: <\/strong>All foreigners who entered Assam before January 1, 1966 were to be granted citizenship.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those who came between January 1, 1966, and March 24, 1971 would be detected and allowed to stay after registering as foreigners for 10 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those who entered after March 24, 1971, were to be detected and deported.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clause 6 of the Assam Accord:<\/strong> It promised \u2018<strong>constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards\u2019<\/strong> to protect the \u2018<strong>cultural, social, and linguistic identity\u2019<\/strong> of the <strong>Assamese people.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Border Security:<\/strong> The Accord called for the <strong>sealing and fencing of the India-Bangladesh border<\/strong> to prevent further illegal immigration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Detection and Deportation Mechanism:<\/strong> A mechanism was to be established for the detection and deportation of illegal immigrants, including the updating of the <strong>National Register of Citizens (NRC).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns &amp;
