{"id":59677,"date":"2025-11-22T19:00:51","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T13:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=59677"},"modified":"2025-11-24T14:51:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-24T09:21:14","slug":"un-international-order-need-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/22-11-2025\/un-international-order-need-reform","title":{"rendered":"UN and International Order Need Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/International Relation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, at the International Conference of Chief Justices in Lucknow, urged the need for reform of the UN and international order to effectively address global conflicts and humanitarian crises.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Need For Reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Outdated Power Structures:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/07-01-2022\/united-nations-security-council-unsc\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/07-01-2022\/united-nations-security-council-unsc\">UN Security Council (UNSC)<\/a> still reflects the <strong>power distribution of 1945<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Five permanent members (P5) with veto power (The veto has repeatedly stalled the UNSC\u2019s ability to act on Ukraine war, Israel\u2013Palestine conflict, Syrian humanitarian crisis &amp; Myanmar crisis)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No representation for major developing countries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Africa and Latin America entirely unrepresented in permanent seats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emergence of New Threats: <\/strong>The UN was not conceived to handle modern challenges such as cyber warfare, AI weaponization, global terrorism, energy supply disruptions, climate-induced displacement, and pandemic-scale health emergencies. These threats require updated multilateral rules, norms, and institutional capacities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Declining Credibility of Multilateral Institutions: <\/strong>Organizations such as the WHO, WTO, IMF, and UNSC face accusations of bias, political interference, inefficient responses, funding shortfalls, and slow decision-making, which harm the credibility of the global rules-based order and encourage unilateral actions by dominant states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marginalization of the Global South: <\/strong>Developing countries argue that their essential priorities\u2014development finance, climate justice, debt relief, and equitable technology access\u2014are sidelined in current global governance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Position on Reform<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Expansion of UNSC:<\/strong> India supports the G4 nations (Brazil, Germany, India, and Japan) proposal for increasing the number of permanent members to include major developing countries and ensuring better representation of regions underrepresented today.
