{"id":59412,"date":"2025-11-19T19:24:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T13:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=59412"},"modified":"2025-11-20T11:51:36","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T06:21:36","slug":"amr-2-0-action-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-11-2025\/amr-2-0-action-plan","title":{"rendered":"National Action Plan on AMR 2.0 Launched"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/Issues Related To Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently, the<strong> <\/strong>Union Health Minister launched the <strong>second version<\/strong> of the <strong>National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) (2025\u201329).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About NAP-AMR 2.0 (2025\u201329)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It addresses gaps from <strong>NAP-AMR 1.0 (2017\u20132021)<\/strong>, including strengthening surveillance, expanding public awareness, enhancing private-sector engagement, and improving regulatory and laboratory capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It adopts a <strong>strong One Health approach<\/strong>, involving coordination across human health, animal health, agriculture, food systems, and the environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It involves over <strong>20 ministries<\/strong> with clear timelines and dedicated budgets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Antimicrobials<\/strong> <em>(including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics)<\/em> are used to treat infections in humans, animals, and plants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when <strong>pathogens no longer respond to <\/strong>Antimicrobials, making infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, illness, disability, and death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a natural process which is accelerated by the <strong>misuse and overuse of antimicrobials<\/strong> in humans, animals, and plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AMR\u2019s Burden<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Globally,<strong> <\/strong>AMR contributed to<strong> 4.95 million deaths in the world<\/strong> in 2019 and it is expected to reach <strong>10 million<\/strong> deaths by 2050.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In India, <\/strong>there were <strong>297,000 deaths <\/strong>attributable to AMR in 2019, and it is expected to reach <strong>2<\/strong><strong>million<\/strong> deaths by 2050.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Lancet report added that more than <strong>80% of Indian patients<\/strong> carry <strong>multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs),<\/strong> the highest globally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Challenges Associated with AMR<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High antibiotic misuse<\/strong> in humans, livestock, poultry, and aquaculture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Easy \u2018Over The Counter (OTC)\u2019 availability<\/strong> of antibiotics despite regulations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weak laboratory networks<\/strong> for microbiological testing and surveillance in many states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low prescription audits<\/strong> and poor implementation of antimicrobial stewardship in smaller hospitals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Environmental contamination<\/strong> due to pharmaceutical effluents and hospital waste containing antimicrobial residues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited public awareness<\/strong>, especially in rural areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fragmented inter-ministerial coordination<\/strong>, despite the One Health framework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Related Efforts &amp;
