class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India and Nepal<\/strong> have amended the <strong>Treaty of Transit<\/strong> to<strong> facilitate the movement of rail-based freight <\/strong>between Jogbani in India and Biratnagar in Nepal.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This liberalisation extends to <strong>key transit corridors <\/strong>\u2014 Kolkata-Jogbani, Kolkata-Nautanwa (Sunauli), and Visakhapatnam-Nautanwa (Sunauli).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>To strengthen multimodal trade connectivity between the two countries and Nepal\u2019s trade with third countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These new measures are expected to <strong>further consolidate economic and commercial linkages<\/strong> between the two countries and beyond.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overview of India &#8211; Nepal Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shared Border:<\/strong> The country shares a border <strong>with five Indian states &#8211; Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Land-locked Nepal relies heavily on India for the transportation of goods and services and access to the sea is through India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship<\/strong>: Signed in <strong>1950<\/strong>, it forms the <strong>bedrock of the special relations that exist between India and Nepal.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nepalese citizens <strong>avail facilities and opportunities<\/strong> <strong>on par with Indian citizens <\/strong>in accordance with the provisions of the Treaty.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Defence Cooperation: <\/strong>India has been assisting the Nepal Army (NA) in its <strong>modernisation by supplying equipment and providing training.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both countries conduct <strong>Joint Military Exercise SURYA KIRAN<\/strong> alternately in India and in Nepal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since 1950, India and Nepal have been awarding each other\u2019s Army Chief with the<strong> honorary rank of General<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Gorkha regiments<\/strong> of the Indian Army are raised partly by recruitment from <strong>hill districts of Nepal.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Economic: <\/strong>India remains <strong>Nepal\u2019s largest trade partner and Investment <\/strong>where Indian firms account for <strong>33.5 % of total FDI stock in Nepal<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nepal is India\u2019s 17th largest export destination, up from 28th position in 2014.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India constitutes 64.1% of the total trade of Nepal, comprising about $8.85 billion USD (Indian FY 22-23).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This includes $8.015 billion USD of exports from India to Nepal and $839.62 million USD of exports from Nepal to India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connectivity and Development Partnership:<\/strong> India is the largest developmental donor of Nepal in the field of priority sectors such as health, education and connectivity.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some of the major projects include Gauchar Airport (presently Tribhuvan Airport), East West Highway, development of cross-border rail links and establishment of <strong>Integrated Check Posts<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy Cooperation: <\/strong>India and Nepal have had a<strong> Power Exchange Agreement since 1971 <\/strong>for meeting the power requirements in the border.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Joint Vision Statement on Power Sector Cooperation 2022: <\/strong>It includes joint development of power generation projects in Nepal, development of cross-border transmission infrastructure, and coordinated operation of the national grids.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Operation Maitri &amp; post-earthquake reconstruction assistance: <\/strong>In the wake of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, GoI was the first responder and carried out its <strong>largest disaster relief operation abroad (Operation Maitri).&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural Ties:<\/strong> The leaders of the two countries have often noted the <strong>age-old \u2018roti beti\u2019 relationship, <\/strong>which refers to <strong>cross-border marriages<\/strong> between people of the two countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Areas of Concerns between India &amp; Nepal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1950: <\/strong>It was an effort to <strong>strengthen and develop ties and to perpetuate peace between the two countries.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As time passed, Nepal believed the treaty was asymmetrical<strong> <\/strong>and <strong>incompatible with the national interest of Nepal.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has consistently stated it is open to reviewing the treaty \u201cin a constructive and forward-looking manner\u201d if Nepal desires it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kalapani dispute: <\/strong>The area is in India\u2019s control but Nepal claims the region because of <strong>historical reasons.<\/strong> The area is the largest territorial dispute between Nepal and India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trust Deficit between the Both Countries: <\/strong>Perception in Kathmandu that India interferes in Nepal\u2019s internal political processes.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s concerns about <strong>growing Chinese influence<\/strong> in Nepal\u2019s infrastructure, trade, and political decisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Occasional political narratives in Nepal portraying India as hegemonic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security Concerns:<\/strong> Both India and Nepal have shared security concerns, including issues related to cross-border terrorism, trafficking, and border security.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perception of Unequal Relationship:<\/strong> Some segments of Nepalese society have expressed concerns about what they perceive as an unequal relationship with India, with allegations of economic dependence and a lack of reciprocity in the bilateral relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Despite these challenges and disputes, India and Nepal have historically maintained close ties and continue to engage in dialogue and diplomatic efforts to address bilateral issues.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both countries recognize the importance of their relationship and are committed to finding mutually acceptable solutions to their differences while promoting cooperation and friendship for the mutual benefit of their
