{"id":58121,"date":"2025-10-31T19:01:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T13:31:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=58121"},"modified":"2025-11-01T11:39:39","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T06:09:39","slug":"us-waiver-to-india-chabahar-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/31-10-2025\/us-waiver-to-india-chabahar-port","title":{"rendered":"US Waiver to India on Chahbahar Port"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has received a <strong>waiver on the United States\u2019 sanctions against Iran\u2019s Chabahar port for a period of six months.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India and Iran signed an MoU in 2015<\/strong> to jointly develop the<strong> Shahid Beheshti Port at Chabahar.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aim: <\/strong>To develop<strong> <\/strong>a major commercial hub helping India access the markets of Afghanistan, the Central Asian states, and Russia.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sanctions: <\/strong>The port\u2019s prospects came under a cloud due to Western sanctions against Iran but in 2018, the first Trump administration gave a waiver to Indian operations.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban in 2021 has exposed anyone associated with the Chabahar project to U.S. sanctions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chabahar Port<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Iran&#8217;s Chabahar port is located on the<strong> Gulf of Oman<\/strong> and is the<strong> only oceanic port of the country.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is situated in the<strong> city of Chabahar <\/strong>in <strong>Sistan and Baluchestan Province.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chabahar has two ports;<strong> Shahid Kalantari and Shahid Beheshti.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The former is an old port with limited water front to accommodate feeder vessels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Shahid Beheshti Port is being developed in four phases. On completion of all 4 phases, port capacity will 82 million tons per year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The port gives access to the<strong> energy-rich Persian Gulf nations&#8217;<\/strong> southern coast and bypasses Pakistan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kandla port in Gujarat<\/strong> is the closest port at 550 nautical miles, while the distance between Chabahar and Mumbai is 786 nautical miles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"add6be\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"892\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Chabahar-Port-pic.webp\" alt=\"chabahar port\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-58136\" style=\"--dominant-color: #add6be; width:514px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Chabahar-Port-pic.webp 892w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Chabahar-Port-pic-300x202.webp 300w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Chabahar-Port-pic-768x517.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 892px) 100vw, 892px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Significance of Chabahar Port for India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Geopolitical Significance:<\/strong> It is strategically located at the <strong>crossroads of South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.<\/strong> It provides India with direct sea access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The port also offers an <strong>alternative route from the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong> for cargo traffic between Central Asian countries and Afghanistan.
