{"id":57892,"date":"2025-10-29T19:27:25","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T13:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=57892"},"modified":"2025-10-30T13:25:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T07:55:19","slug":"global-emission-cuts-paris-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/29-10-2025\/global-emission-cuts-paris-goals","title":{"rendered":"Global Emission Cuts Fall Short of Paris Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The United Nations Synthesis Report has found that global emission reduction efforts are falling short of the targets set under the Paris Agreement (2015).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concerns raised by the Report&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The report is based on countries&#8217; updated <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-09-2025\/india-updated-carbon-targets-cop30\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/24-09-2025\/india-updated-carbon-targets-cop30\">nationally determined contributions (NDC<\/a>)<\/strong>, which are promises to cut fossil fuel emissions or plant forests (to capture carbon dioxide) until 2035.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The report is based on submissions from <strong>64 out of 190 countries<\/strong>. <strong>India<\/strong> is yet to submit its updated NDC, with its last submission made in August 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Countries are on track to reduce emissions by only <strong>17%<\/strong> of 2019 levels by 2035, far below the levels required to keep global warming within 1.5\u00b0C or even 2\u00b0C by the end of the century.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, to keep global temperature rise below 2\u00b0C and 1.5\u00b0C, countries must cut emissions by <strong>37% and 57% of 2019 levels respectively by 2035.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Global Tipping Points Report 2025<\/strong>, highlights that the world is reaching its first climate tipping point, the widespread mortality of warm-water coral reefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>India\u2019s Commitments Emission Reductions<\/strong><br>&#8211; India has launched the <strong>LiFE mission (Lifestyle for Environment)<\/strong> and <strong>updated its NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions)<\/strong> under the Paris Agreement.<br>&#8211; Under its updated NDC 2022, India pledges:<br>1. <strong>45% reduction in emissions intensity<\/strong> (amount of CO\u2082 per unit of GDP) by 2030, compared to 2005 levels.<br>2. <strong>50% of installed electricity capacity<\/strong> will come from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030.<br>3.
