class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Both sides agreed to begin at the earliest, their ministerial-level discussions on:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>bilateral trade and investments,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>re-establishing the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue for cooperation on renewables and critical minerals,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>relaunching the Joint Science and Technology Cooperation Committee,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and encouraging Canadian AI companies and researchers to participate in India\u2019s AI Impact Summit in 2026.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India and Canada have also begun preliminary talks on SMR (Small Modular Technology) nuclear-powered reactors and other cooperation in civil nuclear energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both sides agreed on starting talks on the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/02-02-2023\/india-uae-cepa\" data-type=\"link\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief on India-Canada Relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historical Relations: <\/strong>India and Canada established diplomatic relations in <strong>1947<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shared democratic values and Commonwealth membership have underpinned ties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relations were historically strained after India\u2019s nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998, due to Canada\u2019s non-proliferation stance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic Cooperation:<\/strong> In 2024, India was Canada\u2019s seventh-largest goods and services trading partner, with two-way trade coming to $33.9 billion while Canada\u2019s merchandise exports to India totalled $5.3 billion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Civil Nuclear Cooperation: <\/strong>Nuclear Cooperation Agreement (NCA) was signed in 2010, operational since 2013.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Joint Committee oversees implementation of the 2010 Agreement on \u201cCooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space Cooperation: <\/strong>MoUs were signed in 1996 and 2003 between ISRO and Canadian Space Agency (CSA).\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cooperation includes satellite tracking, space astronomy, and commercial satellite launches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISRO\u2019s commercial arm ANTRIX has launched multiple Canadian nanosatellites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Science and Technology:<\/strong> Department of Earth Science and Polar Canada have started a programme for exchange of knowledge and scientific research on Cold Climate (Arctic) Studies.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Memorandum of Cooperation between National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) and POLAR Canada was signed in 2020.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>People-to-People Links: <\/strong>There are around 1.8 million Indo-Canadians and one million non-resident Indians in Canada, making up over<strong> 3% of its population.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India is the largest source of international students <\/strong>in Canada, with Indians making up around 40% of that group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strong cultural exchanges and vibrant diaspora influence bilateral perceptions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Multilateral Cooperation: <\/strong>Both countries cooperate in forums like the G20, Commonwealth, United Nations, and International Solar repeatedly raised concerns over pro-Khalistan activities, including hate speech, violence, and attacks on Indian diplomatic missions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trade and Investment Uncertainty: <\/strong>Ongoing talks on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) were paused in 2023 amid political tensions.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Despite strong business interest, political issues slow down economic engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Differing Geopolitical Outlooks: <\/strong>India seeks stronger Indo-Pacific cooperation, but Canada\u2019s approach is often
