India and Australia would now implement the free trade agreement on a mutually agreed date as the Australian Parliament approved the pact between the two countries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

About Ind-Aus ECTA\u00a0<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • ECTA is the<\/span><\/span><\/span> first trade agreement of India with a developed country<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> after more than a decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The Agreement encompasses cooperation across the entire gamut of bilateral <\/span><\/span><\/span>economic and commercial relations<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> between the two friendly countries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It provides an institutional mechanism to encourage and improve trade between the two countries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • \u00a0This will also connect with<\/span><\/span><\/span> more than seven lakhs of Australia\u2019s Indian diaspora,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> the second-highest taxpaying diaspora, which makes a significant contribution to Australia\u2019s society and economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The deal provides an <\/span><\/span><\/span>annual quota of 1,800 for yoga teachers and Indian chefs <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and a commitment to over one lakh of India\u2019s outgoing students to Australia, who are likely to benefit from post-study work visas ranging from one-and-half years to four years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The Ind-Aus ECTA <\/span><\/span><\/span>goes beyond merchandise trade and the Indian services <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>sector also gets a major boost as it makes wide-ranging commitments in around 135 service sectors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • The Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status will be granted in about 120 sub-sectors covering key areas of India\u2019s interest such as IT, ITES, education, health and audio-visual.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • It will open a new chapter on India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership between two <\/span><\/span><\/span>vibrant economies with shared interests and trade complementarities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • It provides an o<\/span><\/span><\/span>pportunity for Australian exporters<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to tap the vast Indian market of <\/span><\/span><\/span>1.4 billion consumer<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>s, on the other, it provides an <\/span><\/span><\/span>opportunity for Indian exporters<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to <\/span><\/span><\/span>market their value-added products.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • It will lead to<\/span><\/span><\/span> duty elimination on 100 per cent tariff lines<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with no restrictions and benefit India\u2019s labour-intensive exports such as textiles and apparel, agriculture and fish products, leather, footwear and furniture, several engineering products, jewellery, select pharmaceutical and medical devices, furniture and sports goods.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

          • The agreement would<\/span><\/span><\/span> provide duty-free access<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to over 6,000 broad categories of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Indian products in the Australian market.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>trade deal will boost exports of pharmaceutical<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>s, India\u2019s second-largest export after petroleum products, to Australia, as medicaments that have already been approved in the US and the UK will get e<\/span><\/span><\/span>xpeditious regulatory approval <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>from Australian authorities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • India is the <\/span><\/span><\/span>world\u2019s largest importer of coal<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Out of <\/span><\/span><\/span>India\u2019s coal trade deficit <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of $24 billion, Australia accounts for $11 billion.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

                • \u00a0The Ind-Aus ECTA is likely to make coal, a crucial input for India\u2019s energy needs and its industrial growth, available at competitive prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  • It will contribute to the creation of additional job opportunities for Indians in Australia and an additional 10 lakh jobs in India as a result of Australian investments.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
                  • The trade deal also resolves the long-pending Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) related to IT\/ITES. This will lead to yearly savings of over $200 million, a remarkable achievement.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                            • China is Australia\u2019s largest trade partner with a 33 per cent share in its exports and a 27 per cent share in its imports, compared to India\u2019s 3.7 per cent share in its exports and a 2.4 per cent share in its imports as of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

                              • Strategically, the need for trade diversification away from China for Australia, in view of a multiplicity of geopolitical factors, significantly tilts the balance in favour of India, leading to a<\/span><\/span><\/span> win-win partnership.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
