{"id":56032,"date":"2025-10-04T20:45:54","date_gmt":"2025-10-04T15:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=56032"},"modified":"2025-10-06T12:00:55","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T06:30:55","slug":"india-russia-celebrate-25-years-strategic-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/04-10-2025\/india-russia-celebrate-25-years-strategic-partnership","title":{"rendered":"India-Russia Celebrate 25 Years of Strategic Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/IR<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Russia and India<\/strong> have significantly advanced their 25-year strategic partnership amid a changing global landscape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Background&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2000, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee signed the declaration on strategic partnership, which opened a new chapter in bilateral relations.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In December 2010, the Strategic Partnership was upgraded to a \u201cSpecial and Privileged Strategic Partnership.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple institutional dialogues, including the Intergovernmental Commission and 2+2 Dialogue, ensure strong cooperation across politics, defense, trade, science, and culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Leadership-level engagements<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>India-Russia<\/strong> Annual Summit is the highest dialogue mechanism, with 22 meetings held alternately in both countries.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The summit in July 2024 in Moscow resulted in joint statements on partnership and economic cooperation until 2030, alongside 9 signed MoUs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Indian PM received Russia\u2019s highest honor, the Order of Saint Andrew.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The leaders maintain regular contact through frequent phone calls to discuss bilateral and global issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India and Russia<\/strong> maintain regular ministerial contacts, with frequent meetings between the External Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov and other key ministers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Multilateral engagement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/04-08-2025\/india-russia-partnership-mea\"><strong>India and Russia<\/strong> <\/a>closely cooperate in multilateral forums like the UN, G20, BRICS, and SCO.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2023, during India\u2019s G20 and SCO presidencies, both countries engaged in multiple high-level meetings.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Russia supports India\u2019s bid for a permanent UN Security Council seat.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Russia chaired BRICS in 2024, hosting extensive events including the Leaders\u2019 Summit in Kazan, with India actively participating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trade &amp; Economic relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India and Russia<\/strong> aim to boost bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030 and investment to $50 billion by 2025.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In FY 2023-24, trade hit a record $65.7 billion, with India exporting pharmaceuticals and machinery, and importing oil, fertilizers, and minerals from Russia.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Services trade remains stable, and investments are strong in oil, gas, petrochemicals, banking, railways, and pharmaceuticals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Defence &amp; Security Cooperation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India and Russia<\/strong> have strong defence cooperation under the IRIGC-M&amp;MTC, including joint military exercises like INDRA and Vostok.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key projects include S-400 systems, T-90 tanks, Su-30 MKI jets, MiG-29 and Kamov helicopters, INS Vikramaditya, AK-203 rifles, and BrahMos missiles.
