Government Policy &amp; Intervention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recently, the<strong> Ayushman Bharat,<\/strong> the <strong>world\u2019s largest government-funded health assurance scheme<\/strong>, completed its seven years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About the Ayushman Bharat<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a flagship health initiative, emerged from the <strong>National Health Policy 2017,<\/strong> and was launched in <strong>September 2018 from Ranchi, Jharkhand.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It aims <strong>to achieve<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/19-12-2024\/universal-health-coverage-challenges\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/19-12-2024\/universal-health-coverage-challenges\"> Universal Health Coverage (UHC)<\/a><\/strong> through <strong>two complementary components:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY):<\/strong> It provides \u20b95 lakh per family per year<strong> for secondary and tertiary hospitalization<\/strong>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It covers over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families (approx. 55 crore beneficiaries, i.e. <strong>about 40% of India&#8217;s population<\/strong> based on SECC 2011).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It offers cashless and paperless access to services at public and empanelled private hospitals across India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benefits are <strong>portable nationwide<\/strong>, meaning beneficiaries can access services anywhere in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs):<\/strong> It aims to transform 1.5 lakh sub-centres and primary health centres into HWCs.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It focuses on comprehensive primary care, including screening for non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health services, and essential medicines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>First Ayushman Arogya Mandir<\/strong> inaugurated in <strong>Bijapur, Chhattisgarh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Achievements in Last Seven Years<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Impact at Scale:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 55 crore beneficiaries have been reached since inception;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More than 10.3 crore hospital admissions authorized, translating to \u20b91.48 lakh crore in cashless care;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1.8 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs operate nationwide, delivering preventive and promotive healthcare;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Government health expenditure<\/strong> <strong>rose <\/strong>from 29% to 48%, while <strong>out-of-pocket cost dropped<\/strong> from 63% to 39%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expanding the Beneficiary Base:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2021<\/strong>: Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) was launched as the <strong>digital backbone of Ayushman Bharat, <\/strong>enabling the creation of a <strong>unique Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs<\/strong> for every citizen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2022<\/strong>: Scheme expanded to cover 12 crore families;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>2024<\/strong>: ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and their families were added;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>October 2024:<\/strong> Senior citizens above 70 years gained universal coverage via the<strong> Ayushman Vay Vandana Card;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nearly 1 crore gig and platform workers are now being integrated into the scheme;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img data-dominant-color=\"f0edeb\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"803\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/ca\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Seven-Years-of-Ayushman-Bharat-1024x803.png\" alt=\"seven years of ayushman bharat\" class=\"not-transparent wp-image-55053\" style=\"--dominant-color: #f0edeb;
