It serves as the <strong>only body within the UN<\/strong> where <strong>all 193 member states have equal representation,<\/strong> each holding<strong> one vote.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It <strong>meets annually in New York (Headquarter)<\/strong>, for its General Debate \u2014 a high-profile event where world leaders address <strong>global challenges<\/strong> and outline their <strong>national priorities.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&nbsp; It includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Withdrawal from <strong>WHO, UNESCO, and the Human Rights Council;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Funding cuts<\/strong> to the <strong>UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Halting support for the Paris Agreement and climate-related funds;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reducing contributions to UN operations, including peacekeeping and health, by more than 80%;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unilateralism Over Multilateralism: <\/strong>The Trump administration\u2019s <strong>\u2018America First\u2019 doctrine<\/strong> has often clashed with the UN\u2019s multilateral ethos.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trump is expected to highlight his<strong> record of \u2018ending seven wars\u2019, <\/strong>reinforcing his self-image as a<strong> peace President.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Selective Engagement on Global Issues: <\/strong>The US has distanced itself from key UNGA initiatives, such as high-level conferences on Palestine and the two-state solution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>India\u2019s Choices in a Shifting Order<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditional demands, such as UNSC expansion, face little chance of progress in today\u2019s fractured environment. Instead, India needs to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Focus on strategic priorities like AI governance and digital regulation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Build coalitions that bridge the North-South divide;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase financial contributions, both to the UN\u2019s regular budget (currently only $38 million) and to agencies aligned with national interests;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India needs to scale up its support to reflect its status as the world\u2019s fourth-largest economy.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>China contributes nearly $680 million, and the US $820 million.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The existential crisis of UNGA is less about survival and <strong>more about relevance.<\/strong> It risks becoming increasingly ceremonial, unless reforms enhance its ability to influence international action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reform Proposals and Resistance:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strengthening links between UNGA resolutions and Security Council mandates;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Creating mechanisms to track compliance with General Assembly decisions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rationalizing agenda items to prioritize urgent global crises;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Giving greater budgetary autonomy to implement development-focused mandates;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To reclaim legitimacy, the UNGA needs to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Embrace digital diplomacy and transparent global reporting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Act as the custodian of <strong>global public goods<\/strong>\u2014climate, health, technology governance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serve as the <strong>moral compass<\/strong> that pressures powerful states through global opinion, if not binding law.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cc\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Daily Mains Practice Question<\/strong><br><strong>[Q]<\/strong> Critically examine the factors contributing to the existential crisis of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
