class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to the <strong>National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG)<\/strong>, the Supreme Court of India is witnessing an unprecedented rise in case pendency, with <strong>88,492 matters currently awaiting disposal<\/strong>, that includes <strong>69,605 civil cases<\/strong> and <strong>18,887 criminal cases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has<strong> grown by over 35% in the past five years,<\/strong> despite digitization efforts and structural reforms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full <strong>August 2025 alone<\/strong>, the court registered <strong>7,080 new cases<\/strong>, while managing to dispose of <strong>5,667 cases<\/strong>, reflecting a <strong>disposal rate of 80.04%.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From January to August 2025, the Supreme Court saw <strong>52,630 cases filed<\/strong>, with <strong>46,309 disposed of<\/strong>, marking an annual disposal rate of nearly <strong>88%.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limited Working Days:<\/strong> With court holidays and restricted working hours, the number of sittings remains insufficient to tackle the growing docket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Procedural Complexity:<\/strong> Lengthy procedures, adjournments, and appeals slow down the pace of justice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low Judge-to-Population Ratio<\/strong>: India has one of the lowest judge-to-population ratios globally \u2014 about 21 judges per million people, far below the recommended 50.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Overuse of Special Leave Petitions (SLPs): Article 136<\/strong> allows the Supreme Court to hear appeals in exceptional cases.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>However, SLPs are filed indiscriminately, clogging the docket with matters that could be resolved in lower courts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Government Litigation Overload:<\/strong> The government is the largest litigant, responsible for nearly 50% of pending cases, many of which are deemed frivolous or
