{"id":53892,"date":"2025-09-12T19:58:47","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T14:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=53892"},"modified":"2025-09-13T12:12:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T06:42:11","slug":"suicide-helplines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/12-09-2025\/suicide-helplines","title":{"rendered":"Looking Beyond Suicide Helplines to Tackle Mental Health Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS2\/ Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India\u2019s mental health crisis cannot be solved by suicide helplines alone, as they only serve as emergency interventions while neglecting prevention, access, and systemic causes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A comprehensive approach that integrates healthcare, policy reform, community-based support, and stigma reduction is essential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>About<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>state of mental well-being<\/strong> where individuals can cope with normal life stressors, realize potential, work productively, and contribute to their community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India is home to nearly<strong> one-sixth of humanity<\/strong>, and also bears one of the largest mental health burdens.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/09-06-2025\/mental-healthcare-bridging-health-cover-india\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/editorial-analysis\/09-06-2025\/mental-healthcare-bridging-health-cover-india\">National Mental Health Survey (2015\u201316) <\/a><\/strong>reported that almost <strong>14% of the population <\/strong>required active mental health interventions, a figure worsened by the pandemic\u2019s impact on anxiety, stress, and depression.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suicide helplines serve as an important support mechanism but represent <strong>only the crisis-management <\/strong>tip of a much deeper structural problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Situation in India<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>High Suicide Rates:<\/strong> NCRB (2022) reported over 1.7 lakh suicides, the highest ever, with youth and women being highly vulnerable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Treatment Gap: <\/strong>Over 80% of those with mental health disorders remain untreated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shortage of Professionals: <\/strong>Only 0.75 psychiatrists per 1 lakh people, far below WHO\u2019s recommended 3.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High Treatment Gap: <\/strong>83% remain untreated; Social Justice<\/strong>: Combat domestic violence, discrimination, and addiction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Awareness &amp; De-stigmatisation:<\/strong> Scale-up campaigns like Manodarpan to all sections of society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage responsible <strong>suicide reporting in media.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global Best Practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>UK:<\/strong> IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) programme offers free, evidence-based therapies via NHS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Australia<\/strong>: Youth-centered Headspace Centres integrate counselling, education, and job support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WHO \u2013 mhGAP (Mental Health Gap Action Programme):<\/strong> Focuses on integrating mental health services in general healthcare for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Multi-Pronged Approach Needed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthening Primary Mental Health Services:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrate mental health into Ayushman Bharat Health &amp;
