auctioned at Sotheby\u2019s Hong Kong, were repatriated to India, 127 years after being taken during colonial rule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Piprahwa relics<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Piprahwa relics were&nbsp; discovered in 1898 by British civil engineer William Claxton Pepp\u00e9 in Piprahwa, Uttar Pradesh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They include bone fragments, soapstone and crystal caskets, a sandstone coffer, and offerings such as gold ornaments and gemstones,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are <strong>believed to be associated with the mortal remains of Lord Buddha.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An inscription in the <strong>Brahmi script<\/strong> on one of the caskets confirms these as relics of the Buddha deposited by the Sakya clan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are excavated from the Piprahwa Stupa\u2014widely recognized as the ancient <strong>city of Kapilavastu, the birthplace of Lord Buddha<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Status&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most of these relics were moved to the Indian Museum in Kolkata in 1899 and are legally protected as \u2018AA\u2019 antiquities, forbidding their sale or removal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While some bone relics were gifted to the King of
