{"id":48778,"date":"2025-07-21T20:43:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T15:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=48778"},"modified":"2025-07-22T18:24:58","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T12:54:58","slug":"birth-anniversary-of-mangal-pandey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/21-07-2025\/birth-anniversary-of-mangal-pandey","title":{"rendered":"Birth Anniversary of Mangal Pandey"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In News<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Prime Minister paid tributes to <strong>freedom fighter Mangal Pandey<\/strong> on his birth anniversary.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mangal Pandey<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He was born on 19 July 1827 in Nagwa village, Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-07-2022\/mangal-pandey\">Mangal Pandey<\/a> is renowned for his role as a sepoy in the <strong>34th Bengal Native Infantry <\/strong>of the<strong> British East India Company<\/strong> and for sparking the Indian Rebellion of 1857, widely regarded as<strong> India\u2019s First War of Independence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Major Events&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He refused to use the <strong>newly introduced Enfield rifle because <\/strong>it was believed that the new Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket issued to the sepoys of the East India Company came with a <strong>cartridge dipped in beef and pork fat,<\/strong> which made it anathema to<strong> both Hindu and Muslim sepoys<\/strong>, who had to bite open the cartridge to load the weapon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On March 29, 1857, he mutinied and fired at his Senior Sergeant Major.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was overpowered and hanged on April 8, 1857, by the order of a Court Martial at Lal Bagan in Barrackpore.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On 9 May 1857, 85 sepoys in Meerut refused to use new rifle cartridges believed to be coated with cow and pig fat.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They were dismissed and sentenced to 10 years in jail for disobedience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contributions&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He played a crucial role in sparking the <strong>Revolt of 1857<\/strong> which eventually led to the end of East India Company rule and the beginning of <strong>direct governance by the British Crown under the Government of India Act, 1858.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It appointed a Viceroy as the Crown representative in India in place of the Governor General of India.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lord Canning became the First viceroy under this new system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Legacy&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He was executed by the <strong>British in 1857&nbsp;
