{"id":45779,"date":"2025-06-20T21:11:40","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T15:41:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/?p=45779"},"modified":"2025-07-16T18:10:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-16T12:40:17","slug":"magna-carta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/20-06-2025\/magna-carta","title":{"rendered":"Magna Carta"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS1\/World History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong> Magna Carta (Latin for \u201cGreat Charter\u201d) <\/strong>was signed on <strong>June 15, 1215, at Runnymede Meadows near London.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical Context and Origin (1215)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sealed on 15 June 1215 <\/strong>by <strong>King John of England,<\/strong> following pressure from English barons who <strong>sought to limit the king\u2019s arbitrary power.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Barons<\/strong>, part of the feudal system, were key stakeholders as landholders providing knights and military service to the king.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The immediate cause of baronial rebellion was <strong>John&#8217;s defeat at the Battle of Bouvines (1214) by King Philip II of France.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Long-term causes<\/strong> included military failures (loss of Normandy and Anjou in 1204) and heavy taxation imposed to finance campaigns.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong> It was the<strong> first document<\/strong> to put into writing the <strong>principle that the king and his government was not above the law.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It sought to <strong>prevent the king from exploiting his power<\/strong>, and placed limits of royal authority by establishing law as a power in itself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>charter contents and principles:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Magna Carta consisted of <strong>63 clauses, over 3,500 words.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Addressed both <strong>local governance and broader legal principles.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Key clauses:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clause 39: <\/strong>Protects against arbitrary imprisonment \u2014 \u201cNo free man shall be seized or imprisoned\u2026 except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clause 40: <\/strong>Guarantees access to justice \u2014 \u201cTo no one will we sell, to no one deny or delay right or justice.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immediate Aftermath and Reissues:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>King John quickly sought annulment<\/strong> from Pope Innocent III; conflict resumed with the barons.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>John died in 1216; his nine-year-old son Henry III was crowned. His regents reconfirmed the Magna Carta to secure baronial support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Charter was<strong> reissued multiple times in the 13th century, with <\/strong>Influenced American Revolution and constitutional development \u2014 especially the Bill of Rights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Symbolic value:<\/strong> Seen as a foundational text for modern democracy, even if not originally intended as such.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foundation of Rule of Law: <\/strong>Established the principle that no one, not even the king, is above the law.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introduced the idea that the monarch\u2019s power could be legally restricted, a foundational shift in political
